Topic: Revert to old search layout

Posted under General

This topic has been locked.

Is there any code that can restore the number of images displayed in a single line to the previous quantity????

Add an option to revert to the old layout please. Don't pull a youtube guys, you're better then their crappy team.

Default is a bit wack, good attempt, but this one's not a home run
Edit: full screen mode is a good addition, ty

Full screen mode was the previous big update where everyone was asking why they couldn't see the tag counts on the left side of the screen

actually fullscreen mode was even before that, though that was when the tags were removed on images in Fullscreen mode so people who had accidently put themselves into fullscreen mode beforehand but didn't realize finally realized x'D

This is almost unusable on mobile. Please revert this update.

As a mobile user, this blows. Please devs, revert it back.

This is ass, just saying it straight. I have a monitor with a weird aspect, so this new layout cuts off half of every last row instead of auto-adjusting to fit like before. This is a YouTube level downgrade. Not to mention, even with a CSS adjustment and the crop/size buttons, some thumbnails even on my own Faves page are blurred so bad I can't make them out at a glance anymore.

And, further, the .webm sticker has been sized down. That with the blurred thumbnails makes it impossible to see what's in a vid or even if it IS a vid before I click it. I had two videos missing a blacklisted tag slip by me, and I couldn't see the content in the thumbnail as it was blurred, forcing me to see something full-post I have blacked.

I normally stay out of forum stuff, but this? Revert it, please. This is a downgrade and has actively made this site tougher to navigate, and I cannot fix it on my end. Also, if this sticks, I guarantee somebody'll make a FireFox or browser addon specifically to revert this change. Let's not truly stoop a YouTube level. (Where you NEED a addon lets be real to not drown in ads.)

On PC I found you can set card size to "Small" by clicking the gear icon near the search bar, but I can't seem to find this in mobile mode? Still don't like it, not sure what the purpose of this change was.

sadly that doesnt do anything for me and once i click i and refresh the site it just goes back to the previous settings and i dont have a like "accept" or "OK" buttons to lock those settings in so im stuck with a worse UI now

EDIT: tried google chrome. i guess it works there but firefox just says nah and thats my preffered browser. this sucks

Updated

If it aint broke, don't fix. The new update is pretty bad. Going from 4 images per row to two, weirdly squaring the thumbnails so i don't see it all, and blurring the thumbnails is horrible.
Yeah i see that there is a "fix" to have 3 in a row, does not fix it for me.
Just give us the option to revert back to what worked for 12 years... PLEASE!

I will also +1 for reverting the layout because this one is not great. The new way images are shown is terrible and setting crop to full and size to small makes them worse than they were before, and large size is also not really great.

to have 3 thumbnails per row on mobile add the following to your user css:

@media (max-width: 50rem) {
section.posts-container { grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr); }}

This is my current CCS code. Do I need to make any changes?

yes, the amount of columns that the search shows is set; it's not effected by how large the individual thumbnails are (it's closer to the other way around).

you can modify/overwrite this set value with this CSS rule:

.posts-container { grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr); }

this in your CSS box would force it to use columns to 3 no matter what, for example. you can change the 3 in that rule to have more or fewer columns.

Inane change. I like to browse this site in very small 67% or so zoom on my desktop ultrawide and this is absolutely abhorrent to look at and an assault on the eyes. Revert that shit brahs.

This new ui change has ruined the pool tab too. The titles of the pools get cut off only after a few words, making it harder to know what a pool is about from a glance.

If you click on the gear next to your search bar and set as "image crop:full" and "card size:small" it get less blurry and not cropped.

Hope that means with the larger thumbs they will regenerate it to be in better quality in the future...right?

I don't see these settings in the menu when I click the gear.

"Why would hackers have fun"

That's just about the worst non-argument you could say

Seriously, think a bit

Why would hackers take days to weeks, maybe even months or years to break into a site's servers just to change around a ui page, add some settings, remove some settings, and regenerate all image samples

And, why would the developer and sysadmin let it go on for so long? Our developer has been right here the entire time and this had been going on for at least 3 hours

None of it makes sense if you just think for a few extra seconds

Hey, instead of doing dumbass moves like this without any global announcements, how about y'all fucks use the News feature to say something that the UX was going to change like this? Last one I see is from May 2025.

New search layout is a lot worse for me, having images in 2 lines instead of 3 and thumbnails feeling off... I went into settings in multiple places and messed with mobile/desktop view and there's no solution or revert to old way

It would be awesome to not have to use this godawful new layout... Please add an option to revert

wwwwwwwww

Privileged

not as huge a deal to me but i also don't like the new layout.

>slower finding what you want to fap to since there's less options on the screen at once.
>images are too big that you end up "viewing" them rather than "previewing" them. the image is large enough that you brain tries to take everything in, including the details, all at once, rather than before when you just instantaneously took in the art style and an understanding of what (in general) is going on in the picture. kinda weirdly uncomfortable as a design choice. i'd compare the sensation to youtube, but if the thumbnails weren't still images and instead the videos just started silently playing at thumbnail-size

I'm also part of this mob, the new thumbnails are oversized as hell and honestly speaking the lop sided thumbnails helped give a better preview than these square thumbnails.
I'm sure it's already been said so I'll stop there.

On mobile web browser: is there any way to disable cropping minatures, so images are not cut? I want to see full images where searching.

(Story 😅: Exactly what I was looking for to fix mobile
I use it mainly to keep up with artists on mobile to not have my phone have logins to all kinds of smut sites. The 2 per row was way less helpful for that, especially if they had posted a series of images recently 🫡)

IDK why people are using CSS here. There's a button for it built in.
Click the "Gear" icon under the search icon, change "Card size" to "Small". Ez.

beyond this, said gear icon also will not persist across browsers and can't really customize that much, css covers both of those

This new browsing format is hot garbage. The inability to simply browse is a huge, HUGE detraction for these sites- 4.5 thumbnails a page on mobile- switching to desktop mode is worse and forces them into an even more spaced out narrow 2x2 format.

Why would you do this? Please revert to the previous format or at least make this bloated nonsense optional.

As a mobile user, this is worse for me. Im only getting 2 rows. I actively turn mobile support off to look lore like desktop displaying way more images if I want them bigger I can just pinch to zoom in as a please. This change would be fine if it was strictly for mobile support mode and not forced onto everyone and dregrading the experience for many.

Besides the quality of the UI changes themselves (though I agree with the mostly negative sentiment), the communication from staff on this really could have been better. If you're gonna push a big change like this to the site, you should at least have made and stickied a thread on here with something like "hey guys, we've made x change to the site UI, we did this because we thought it would improve y, please give us your feedback!". Instead a random thread by some frustrated user became the de facto official thread about this change, leaving users to have to trawl through four pages of mostly people complaining in search of any official statements from the staff.

Yeah, how am I supposed to jerk it with this terrible layout being so distracting?

On top of that the only statments we have got have been rather passive aggressive. Cinder even replied to someone complaining and said: "yes I agree. I should have increased the thumbnail size by 1 pixel every day, to ease y'all into it." Cinder then deleted that right after posting it and they havent said anything since.
I really hope they fix this because this seems to be almost a universally disliked change.

So, where is the code that completely returns the layout to before,At present, although my code can restore the size of the images to before, the quantity is still 4 per line

The no image crop looks so ugly, how did this get past QA?

tenchizero said:
Try these:

article.thumbnail a {
  background: unset;
  height: fit-content;
  width: fit-content;
  margin-left: auto;
  margin-right: auto;
  margin-top: auto;
}

article.thumbnail > a::before {
  top: auto;
  left: auto;
  margin-top: 0.5rem;
  margin-left: 0.5rem;
  border: 1px solid var(--color-text-muted);
  border-radius: 3px;
}
margin-top: auto;

This line makes the posts align at the bottom.

For anyone looking this far into the thread for how to get the layout to look like it did originally, what you want is this:

article.thumbnail a {
  background: unset;
  height: fit-content;
  width: fit-content;
  margin-left: auto;
  margin-right: auto;
}

article.thumbnail > a::before {
  top: auto;
  left: auto;
  margin-top: 0.5rem;
  margin-left: 0.5rem;
  border: 1px solid var(--color-text-muted);
  border-radius: 3px;
}

As a reminder: Go to Settings, select the "Advanced" tab, scroll down to the Custom CSS field and copy-paste the above script into it. Should work.

the only QA is our one developer, the one designing features
He doesn't really have time to do excessive testing and QA between actually developing the site and his real world full time job

Yes, actually. I forgot to remove it.
There isn't a dev team, not really. It's just me and a couple more volunteers.

I'll mirror both the theme and search options on the settings page at some point, but right now I'm more focused on fixing more noticeable bugs.

That’s sounds great! Thanks and good luck!

how long would it take to push the update to a local clone of it in their dev machine and preview the changes and see oh wow this sucks.

It 100% was tested locally, people have differing opinions, that doesn't mean it wasn't tested at all

Whatever they did, I absolutely hate it and want the old layout. In addition, image previews are extremely pixelated.

fair enough I guess, I forgot some people like it cause all the messages I see its universally hated. just reminds me of the times where github dev I knew would push updates to break things just so they would get issue tickets, "Don't fix what aint broke?, nah break it then fix it"

I just plain don't like it. Most have already expressed it here since I wanna just see through It quicky since with the preview image its still cuts off certain part but the bigger size is still as blurry as its smaller one.

After a full day of browsing I can confidently confirm that the new design is absolutely terrible, and is an insult to everyone who has invested years of their lives into this site

There's a lot of negative sentiments in here, but I personally think this change is for the better. Ideally new thumbnails would have been generated for more posts before it was released, but I can already see older posts getting the new higher quality thumbnails. I'm not having any issues on mobile, but it's probably worth investigating since there's a god chunk of reports.

I do prefer the look of cropped thumbnails, previously images with extreme aspect ratios would just have useless thumbnails. I tried using custom css to set object-fit: contain; on these images before but the thumbnail quality was too low back then.

For a future update it might be of value to define a point of focus for thumbnails which would be used to either generate thumbnails that are always square, or combine with object-position: x% y%; to guarantee that a primary element of the image is always visible.

I think you can also agree it would of been a good idea to had a setting to revert it back to how it was, cause even putting it to small and full, its not the same how it was before, so you need css to actually get it back to normal

Is there like, any benefit to this at all? I guess this gives better resolution, but this is just trying to fix a problem that was never a problem and breaking everything else. I think this should be an obscure setting, because that's what it feels like it is.

Similar to what some people have said already, I normally don't really like when UIs change, but they tend to grow on me after a while. This on the other hand feels like a YouTube type of UI change. i.e just making things different, not to be easier to use or to be more accessible, but just to be different. I haven't checked out the desktop version yet, and that one might be alright since I use RE621 anyways. However, I've used the mobile version a quite a bit, and 2 posts per row is really not working for me. The new layout feels very claustrophobic, and makes every page feel less like looking through different posts, and more like looking at a collection of images someone put together, if that makes sense?
Edit: grammar

Bigger, higher quality thumbnails are always welcome (wish e-hentai did something like this but I understand why they won't...) the problem was, again, doing it without any type of announcement and instructions to at least config it back to nearly what it was before the update, they could have implemented it "hidden" but with the older configs (full crop+small) as default until most of the thumbs were regenerated but I get it that would take too long.

…and it will happen again in the future lol.

Idk what I did to my iPad layout but I’m getting 1 row *cries*

I usually do flags when I’m laying in bed at night on my iPad, but ended up doing them on my computer last night because I couldn’t. Will say the ui update doesn’t bother me as much on computer since it allows me to see images a bit bigger making editing from the search page or looking for images that need to be flagged easier.

According to my very scientifical calculations, you will get all of the posts' thumbnails recropped and at higher res in about 46 days, if it doesn't skip some posts for whate- oh it just did that didn't it.

Well just leave it crunching furries in the background, and maybe keep the lower res thumbnails and add a data saver option, even if both are still a jpeg so the savings aren't as substantial.

While I also liked the old layout more and think there should just be an option for users to go back to the old one if they want. Here's some feedback for the new layout.
-Uncropped thumbnails should be the default with cropped being alternate. The cropping feels too aggressive.
-There should be a few more options for card size besides just large and small. I personally wouldn't mind a medium that's between small and large but could also see an extra large being use useful with the new full screen mode. Maybe a slider where the user can pick their own scale.
-Fullscreen mode when viewing a single image should be separate from fullscreen mode browsing thumbnails. I would be really nice if I could use fullscreen mode when browsing but then not need to turn it off to see tags on an Image.
-In fullscreen mode when viewing a single image it would be nice if there was an option to have the image be centered instead of the far left side of the screen.
I don't hate the new layout but it does still need work.

Cinder i appreciate you and whatever people may be assisting you trying to make the website better. But i feel like it is fairly clear that people are immensely unhappy about this change. Are there any plans to revert it at all?

Ah yes, lets just hand the site's development over to AI-powered Vibes Coders who don't understand actual good UX

Cheers for that, much appreciated

I'm gonna beat a dead horse for a second, but as was stated here:

donovan_dmc said:

which is why I want to stress that there should be an option to either revert to the old layout, or switch to this new layout. Some people will like it, some won't, and forcing an aesthetic change on people without giving them an option is generally unpleasant for most(if not all) involved. More options and customization from a user standpoint is never a bad thing.

Now, I'm not gonna say "this update is trash" and "this ui sucks" but I am going to try to explain what I like about the old ui that I feel is lost with the new one. The old ui conforming to the image posted made it feel more unique, like a cork-board collage of a bunch of artists showcasing what they've made. Sure there was empty unused space between images as a result, but I feel this space also helped make each piece "pop" more...it made each one stand out more like it was demanding its own attention. With this new ui though...the bland office-cubicle squares really detract from this, and to me it seems each image is blending into one another, lost in a sea of colors. Its much harder for me to give any one piece my proper attention while browsing, its a bit overbearing and visually overwhelming. Even with the small picture and full image settings on, the ever present cubicle is visible and does not help with my above issues.

I hope none of this discourages people from contributing to the site, its cool that people are willing to put their time in for (presumably) free. I will say though, considering this has turned into a point of contention, I do hope that this can be used as a learning experience moving forward.

everything tech related has to have AI in the description or name now, even NAS's and dishwashers.

Also I am surprised the UI hasn't been reverted yet.
