Topic: Revert to old search layout

Posted under General

This topic has been locked.

Asking for the purpose of usability, as I have difficulty reading the larger, more spaced out icons. Is there a way to go back to having how they were before the new layout? If not, is it possible to implement one, or a setting to change the size of results on searches?

EDIT: seems this is purposeful, and that this thread has become 'containment'. Please remember to be respectful in response, cus feedback will be a lot more encouraging/enticing to acknowledge than just complaints.

Agreed 💯

The larger images are blurry, too. When searching, I don't want to see larger previews, I want to see more so I can browse quicker and easier. More results displayed at once >>>>>>>> bigger previews. I'll click the image if I'm interested.

Yeah this is pretty godawful on PC, haven't seen on mobile yet. Where's the revert button? Please don't tell me this is a permanent change...

On PC I found you can set card size to "Small" by clicking the gear icon near the search bar, but I can't seem to find this in mobile mode? Still don't like it, not sure what the purpose of this change was.

Surely this can't be intentional right? Going from displaying the full image in a small but non blurry way to displaying a cropped portion of the image in a blurry way can't possibly be seen as an 'upgrade', right?

Yes, please. On PC this looks weird and pixely, like it's way too zoomed in, but it also doesn't show the whole thumbnail on a lot of pictures making the preview kind of pointless.

Agreed, this new layout zooms in on some pictures, making them harder to read in the thumbnail, and the blurryness makes it even worse

Did they just push this 10 minutes ago? I logged on and was surprised there were no posts about it. But yeah, it seems not good, doubly so since theres no option to adjust or revert.

Yeah, agreed although I'll have to see how the sidebar acts since my PC has touch.

Thanks for the head's up. Using that to set the images to "full" got rid of the pixelization, and setting them to "small" gets it to look sort of like it used to. I'd personally like a "medium" as the small pictures are super tiny for me.

Gotta be honest, this update just wasn't it, especially with making thumbnails consistent squares that crop shit out.

You can add this to the custom CSS in settings/advanced to revert:

article.thumbnail img {
  object-fit: contain;
}

section.posts-container {
  --thumb-image-size: 150px;
}

Edit: It didn't like comments so explanation here:
1st class reverts the thumbnail cutoff of not 1:1 images
2nd class sets the size of the thumbnails

Edit 2: There is a settings button under the search field as others mentioned, you should use that instead.

yeah i think we're experiencing the very beginning of it. lemme see how this is on mobile and i'll get back to this

edit: so on mobile its slightly easier to see the previews but now the page is long as hell and is just 2 columns that go all the way down. this genuinely couldve used some more testing or an opt in, buuut whatever

It is a april jokes? because congratulations we are 279 days in advance... the quality of all thumbnails are pixelated/blurry and lots of the post are cropped and see stuff im not into jump in my face... Can we just go back already?

If you click on the gear next to your search bar and set as "image crop:full" and "card size:small" it get less blurry and not cropped.

Hope that means with the larger thumbs they will regenerate it to be in better quality in the future...right?

This time, there actually is a setting to revert it - there's a gear under the searchbar (on desktop at least), you can switch it to small.
Also, the posts are just blurry for now, thumbnails are being regenerated - later they'll be better, but that'll take a while. You can see it works decently on the newest posts.

I'm in favour of this since they removed the ability to see tags by hovering over thumbnails, so now I'm less likely to need to clear my browser history. That being said, A) they're gonna need to make the thumbnails less blurry and B) they are a bit too big, so I'd like a "medium" as that other person said. Or, just, y'know, reinstate that hovering feature because I have no idea why they would remove it

Oh good, I like seeing fewer things when I'm trying to find what I want. You know, I always thing "there's just too many options".

Feels like this is one of those "We're doing this for mobile users" thing, making it more annoying for most users in general.

I hope they let us go back to the old size on mobile soon

Exactly! Why be able to see a good amount of pictures while browsing when I can just see a tiny handful of pictures?! It's awesome! (Please fix this).

I really dont understand the desire to cater to mobile users so much, especially when it affects desktop users negatively but they just don't care. I only ever use mobile through a 3rd party viewer so it's actually directly built for mobile, though I guess change could possibly be nice for the few people out there that do use the regular site on mobile. But what's especially funny here is that it even made mobile worse apparently, lol, lmao. I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to model the new layout to look like the infamously terrible twitter media section, with CROPPED previews on an image hosting site as the default, it's just kinda hilarious.

Yeah... But as a mobile user is also awful, I don't know who are they doing this for. It's so annoying, it has to be a big, right?

to have 3 thumbnails per row on mobile add the following to your user css:

@media (max-width: 50rem) {
section.posts-container { grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr); }}

+1 on this.
The bigger and cropped thumbnails make me VERY dizzy. Even after I set the thumbs to not be cropped and smaller, the fixed width of the card borders make them still very difficult to look at. The old layout was MUCH easier on my eyes and strained them less.

thank fuck, i immediately went here searching for a way to revert it when there wasn't one in settings. i hope the jpeg compressed thumbnails are temporary because it makes the whole site feel amateur when all of the preview images make you feel like you have cataracts.

i really wish they'd just stop trying to change the layout of the site, it was the exact same for the past 5 years i was on here and nobody complained about it, and now they keep changing it. at least have a way to revert it back to the old style like furaffinity.

That's just been the Internet experience in general ever since smartphones started getting crazy cheap at the turn of the last decade.

I get the sentiment but this, but I think with the fact that the only place that the settings to change or modify the new layout is entirely unavailable in mobile view, this change was not focused on the mobile experience.

THANK YOU!. PLEASE MARRY ME /j

No but really thanks for this, it has been an eyesore as a mobile user seeing these new changes...

Can we just not randomly change the websites entire layout? What ever happened to dont fix what isn't broken. Shit worked, no one bitched, leave it till the heat death of the universe or till it does break.

This change was certainly not for mobile. With the thumbnails per row having decreased by one (from 4 to 3 in landscape and from 3 to 2 in portrait mode) and completely breaking any neat grid structure, I have a very hard time finding anything that could call this improvement on mobile (from what I see, there is none). Not to mention that you can not even change anything about that in mobile mode itself.
Certainly unnecessary IMO.

The image size options are nice, though I do agree that the thumbnails seem crustier than before? Maybe I'm just nocebing IDK

Ah but you see, if you aren't randomly changing layout and ui design and justifying it by saying you're 'modernizing' (making the experience worse, especially for those that have used the site for years) you aren't really working as a graphics designer. They HAVE to do this, and if you dislike it and want it reverted you just "dislike change" (like that's a bad thing) or something.

seralth said:

I'm trying so hard to be open to change these days, like I used to be, and not just hate on things that are "new". But the current tech landscape has me so broken, some days I wake up and my whole phone has changed on me while I slept. Every app shifts, nothing remains stable in your hands and I just want to cry sometimes. When an app makes me do a "guided tour" of new features and I just wanted to use it quickly, in the same way I've used it every day, I just scream. An exasperated little choke.

*seethe*seethe*seethe*

I dislike having to scroll just to see what on one page alone. Can we please revert this, its awful and badly pixeled.

This seems to be the best fix for me:

article.thumbnail img {
  object-fit: contain;
}

section.posts-container {
  --thumb-image-size: 150px;
}

@media (max-width: 50rem) {
section.posts-container { grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr); }}

Paste it on your CSS on the advanced settings tab.

Guys, not sure if this is just a Mandela effect for me, but even when switching the thumbnails to small and showing the full image, didn't the old layout put outlines according to the actual image dimensions? So if it was a rectangular piece, the blue pending outline would outline the actual rectangle shape. Now it's all squares, and it really bothers me seeing the letterboxing effect it creates. I'm not crazy here, right?

The blurry thumbnails are a mistake, no matter what. If you increase the size, you'll have to increase the resolution to match.

Thanks for this, made it so mobile went back to 3 images per row instead of 2.

This ui change sucks. Much like the last one did. Not that I don't appreciate the site being run, but if this is an accessibility feature or something, it should be made optional. Having your view not be compact when browsing through hundreds of images just makes for an obnoxious amount of scrolling for anyone who could already see the thumbnails just fine.

Alongside the issues mentioned above, for me the upvote/comment display is gone too. The increase in thumbnail size is unpleasant for those with high posts-per-page settings too. I'm not a fan of any of this

Edit: The display issue fixed itself, still was inconvenient having to switch to desktop mode to revert the size.

Yes, and I don't like it too.
I'm fine with the change of the size (at least while it is reversible), but all square outlines kinda piss me off.

this layout update is worse on both mobile and desktop. while larger portrait-mode rectangles makes sense on mobile, squares on desktop so large that only two columns are visible makes less sense. in both cases, cropping thumbnails to fill instead of scaling to fit makes the content barely recognizable, and most of the thumbnails are very badly resized into fuzzy pixelated blobs, making them fully unrecognizable. with thumbnail squares and rectangles so much larger than before, changing thumbnails from scaled to fit to cropped to fill is a step backwards on top.

I do wish there was some more middle ground between "we have a new UI change we think you're going to love" and "wow you changed my spacebar heater fuck you" with these things. Very frustrating to see any discussion about it being very one sided from both sides.

Maybe things should be kept largely similar if it is working? Maybe changes should be telegraphed ahead of time? Maybe there should be more work to show people why the UI changes are actually really useful, and people should be expected to at least get an idea of why they were changed before complaining about it?

In this case I think the issue is primarily "We made a major UI change with a fallback but changed the default", if it was "hey we added a big thumbnail mode" in a news announcement and the default not being changed, maybe people wouldn't be so cranky about it?

Idk, this shit sucks. Not the change but just both sides of this just reacting with a big fuck you to the other.

The old layout did indeed put the colored borders around the actual images, and not the grid squares. With this new update, those images that are slightly rectangular have their long borders hanging off loose, and particularly long or tall images appear to have their borders closer to their neighbors than themselves. I personally much prefer the layout we had up until a few hours ago.

It's odd because the thumbnails in the forum look fine what with their different shapes and sizes of rectangles that do not feel distracting against the lighter blue backdrop. But the dark backgrounds to the general pool viewing mixed with the different colors for parent/child posts or pending/approval and the general lower thumbnail quality make it very uncanny for me.

No, you're not crazy. I really preferred this old style. I don't like how square everything is now. Like, what if there was a comic-strip that was really long, but now it's only showing a square for one or two panels of it. It doesn't really make much sense to me why they would change the UI.

Not to mention the blurrieness of the thumbnails.

.posts-container a, .posts-container img { height: fit-content; }

This works for the most part. If the image is longer than it is wide, then it's cropped a little funny and you can see some of the outline on the bottom corners by the upvotes and rating and it still doesn't change the blurriness of the thumbnail.

jjst putting in my 2 cents
This new layout is terrible and everything is blurry.

dont just fix the blurriness, the drop in information density is even worse.

Genuinely getting on my knees to beg for this to be reverted, good lord. I'm sorry to whoever spent their time designing this but it's just... really, really bad.

Sorry to whoever worked on this, but it looks awful, chief.

Yeah, I really hope this is a mistake. This is awful. I don't need the mobile layout with cropped thumbnails on desktop. Even the 'Disable cropped thumbnails' setting doesn't work anymore. Used to have 5 rows of 10 images per row on fully on screen while browsing, now it's 3 and a half with 6 pixelated cropped images per row.

Guh, why do people keep insisting on replacing things instead of adding new features and allowing the end user to actually decide what they want?

Log in today to look at some stuff before work and find that the "posts" page is showing these really large images. I've been trying to limit my porn intake so for a while now I've only been looking at the first five or six rows but NOPE, now instead of having fifty images to look at I only have eighteen!
Because of this very forum I have since switched it back to "Large" via the option but why make this the default and not tell people about it? As soon as I saw the large images I looked at the news banner but, nope, nothing there about this change. If there had been something in the news banner on how to revert things back to "before" then I'd not be as upset but the fact we didn't get told about it has me really upset.

Anyways. Alright. Moving on.

So, the "Posts" page is, somewhat back to how I'm used to. So I'll just make the same setting change on the "Pools" page and everything will be fine right? Ah, no. No option on the "Pools" page. Now all the Pool titles are cut short. I go mostly by Pool name, not whatever the first image preview is, because the first image preview can get changed. But now I don't know if this pool is "XXyv by Artist1" or if it is "XXyv by Artist2" because some pools wind up getting the same general name and only separated by the artist.

Just, why? I understand wanting to improve and make things better but why why WHY does everyone keeping forcing the change on people right out of the gate instead of giving people the option to switch over. I have to deal with this from Windows and my software programs and work apps and now my image hosting site as well?

This is going to totally taint my whole night and the night was already looking to be a bad one. ~Sigh~

Thank you so much !!!

I just can't believe you have to go in the forum to find people's css code to fix something when there's a UI change because it broke something making the navigation just straight up worse. (Not all UI change made it worse... But still)

If they wanted to change how many posts per row you can see (on mobile) it would have been nice to just... Add a setting for that...

e6 already has by far the best UI (and systems) of all other website similar to it, it's disheartening whenever that sort of stuff happens.
