statue of peace

The Statue of Peace is a controversial memorial in Seoul, South Korea, commemorating the many Korean women pressed into sexual slavery as comfort women by the Japanese army during the Second Sino-Japanese War and Pacific War phases of World War II, when the Empire of Japan invaded and controlled Korea. Situated across the street from and facing the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, it consists of two chairs, one empty and the other with a comfort woman sitting in it. Japan considers it disrespectful and has demanded it to be removed, but Korea has continued to refuse unless Japan apologizes for the actions of its military during the invasion. Replica statues have been erected in other countries at the urging of local Korean communities, often with pushback from Japan.
