31 Minutos is a Chilean television series created by Pedro Peirano and Álvaro Díaz for TVN and produced by Aplaplac. The show originally ran from 2003 to 2005 with three seasons, following the job of various puppets running a news station; as it went on, the series changed its focus from an educational approach to being mainly a work-com with character-driven episodes.
The show was originally pitched in 2002 for national funding, where it got picked up by TVN for its first season. Having become a hit with kids and adults, it quickly rose to popularity and even earned the crew several awards, such as an International Emmy. After its promised three seasons and expanded fame through Nickelodeon's syndicated reruns in other countries, a theatrical movie was put into production for 2008; due to its ballooning budget and poor marketing, the film quickly bombed in theaters and left Aplaplac with a hefty debt.
The show took a seven-year production hiatus due to the massive theatrical failure of the movie putting the entire production in the red. The franchise recovered through live shows and concerts, including several appearances in Lollapalooza Chile and the Viña del Mar Music Festival. A fourth season aired in 2014, which was subsequently put on Cartoon Network's schedule as well as Netflix's catalog.
Currently, 31 Minutos lives on through live shows, musical singles and various PSAs, with a Christmas-themed movie set to come out in late 2025.
