Sub-tympanic Shields are anatomical feature most prevalent among iguanas and some other species of lizards. They are a hard shield like round scale located beneath an iguana's jowls. While it is unknown for sure what the true purpose of the plate is, the general scientific consensus is that since the Iguana's eardrums are located directly above the shield, it purpose is the protect the ears.
