Shell plc (private limited company) is a British multinational oil and gas company headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The second largest public oil and gas company by revenue, Shell is among the big oil companies, operating extensive oil and gas services across the world, including in oil and gas extraction, refinement, and distribution. Much of the company is comprised of national subsidiaries which break up the company's operations globally. Shell owns several large oil brands, including Pennzoil and Jiffy Lube.
Founded originally in 1907 through the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company and The Shell Transport and Trading Company, the company was one of the two big oil companies in the world, competing directly with Standard Oil in the United States. By the 1920s, Shell was the largest oil producing company in the world, eventually expanding into chemical products by 1930. Following the second world war, Shell continued to operate with significant profits due to their exclusive contracts, dominating the British oil and gas industry despite competition. By the 2000s, Shell began to experience losses due to their overstatement on their oil reserves, leading to significant turmoil within the company leading to the two companies that comprised of Shell to be fully bought out by the Shell parent company, informally unifying the company into a single British based company. Since then, the company has been experiencing revenue losses, dropping to become the second largest oil in gas company by market cap in Europe in 2020.
