A type of dragon seen in European mythology, characterized by a closer resemblance to a lizard, possessing membranous wings, spikes/horns, walks on all fours but is sometimes seen standing or even walking on only two, and sometimes ability to breathe fire. They are more likely to be portrayed as unintelligent and animal-like than Eastern dragons, but many are also portrayed as intelligent. Western dragons are commonly portrayed as greedy and voracious, sleeping on vast hoards of gold and terrorizing villages to consume livestock.
Fafnir, of Norse mythology, is considered one of the oldest examples of a Western dragon, and heavily influenced the design of Smaug; most modern depictions are, in turn, heavily based on Smaug.
