Viverridae is a family of small to medium-sized mammals, the viverrids. They are Feliforms, a suborder of mammals that are either feline or feline-like, comprising of animals like herpestids and hyena. Viverrid's fit into the latter category, as while they are not felines they are very feline-like, and in fact are the most primitive of feliforms.

Most species have relatively small heads with short, erect ears, a relatively long, pointed muzzle, and tufts of facial vibrissae between the lower jaw bones. Most species have stripes, spots, or bands on their bodies, and their tails are often ringed with contrasting colors. Most have glands near their anuses that produce a strong-smelling musk; in some species the odor is sufficiently potent to ward off predators. The secretion from these glands often is used as a perfume base and medicine. Male viverrids also have a baculum, or bone, within their penises.
