Species: atlas bear

The Atlas bear (Ursus arctos crowtheri) was a subspecies of brown bear once found in North Africa but is now believed extinct since 1870. Their populations were decimated during the Roman Empire, and subsequent centuries of hunting and collecting for zoos finished them off. However, there was a supposed sighting in the 1950s.
