A comforter is a thick form of bedding containing an outer cover, and an insulating fill. This is different from a blanket, which only contains a single layer of material. Comforters can be distinguished from other types of bedding by its thick, squishy appearance. Sometimes the two outer layers are stitched together through the bedding itself to form straight lines dividing the fabric into stitched sections. The sections may resemble squares or diamonds if both vertical and horizontal stitching is used.
