A Japanese mermaid yokai who allegedly delivers prophesies of harvests and plagues. Legend states that, if one views an image of the Amabie, they are protected from illness. Following the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, Japanese twitter users started creating illustrations of the Amabie.

Its name (アマビエ) may be a misspelling of "Amabiko" (アマビコ), another kind of Japanese mythological creature.
