The Northern harrier (Circus hudsonius), originally known as a marsh hawk, or Northern marsh hawk is the only species of harrier local to North America. Its closest relative is the South American cinereous harrier. The European equivalent of this species is the hen harrier, which also shares the common name marsh hawk. Despite its common name, it is not currently listed as a type of marsh harrier. See: Wikipedia (Marsh harrier)
Northern harriers may feature grey, brown, or blackish feathers on its upper parts (back, rump, hindneck, wings, and crown), while featuring a white countershading on its chest, and underbelly. Dark spots appear on its chest area.
