Species: yellowjacket (wasp)
Yellowjacket is the common name in North America for predatory social wasps of the genera Vespula and Dolichovespula.
Many species feature alternating black and yellow color patterns on the abdomen. It may be very difficult to distinguish between different species of yellowjackets, and easily confused with hornets and other wasp species such as the European paper wasp.
Yellowjackets can typically be distinguished from bees by the body texture. Bees tend to have fuzzy abdomens, while hornets and yellowjackets are smooth and shiny.
