Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (also known simply as MGM), is an American media company founded on April 17, 1924, through the merger of Metro Pictures Corporation, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. It is headquartered in Beverly Hills, California. Louis B. Mayer was also one of the two co-founders, along with Marcus Loew.

MGM is famous for its vanity plate, which features the studio's lion mascot, Leo the Lion, roaring. This was inherited from Goldwyn Pictures which also featured a lion mascot. Although MGM has always referred to its mascot as "Leo the Lion", only the 7th and currently-used lion is actually named Leo. The Leo the Lion vanity plate has been parodied numerous times (including in some Tom and Jerry cartoons) due to its recognisability.

Mascot history (and real name):

  • 1916–1923 (Goldwyn Pictures Lion) and 1924-1928 (Slats; originally named Cairbre - didn't roar and instead simply looked around. Only MGM lion not to roar.)
  • 1928–1956 (Jackie)
  • 1928–1932 (Telly)
  • 1932–1935 (Coffee)
  • 1934–1956 (Tanner)
  • 1956–1958 (George)
  • 1957–present (Leo)
