Gym Leaders in the Pokémon series are the leaders of, as well as general caretaker of, Pokemon Gyms. They are, essentially, the "boss" for trainers to defeat once they reach them. When defeated, leaders give out badges to signify progress through the region's gyms. Gym Leaders commonly play key roles in the plot of the main games and/or other Pokémon media such as the anime.

In the Alola region (the setting of Sun & Moon Versions), gym leaders are replaced by "trial captains", who serve a similar role. Trial captains ask trainers to perform some task to demonstrate their competence (either beating other opponents, or performing a minigame) before challenging them.
