post #142132 post #1283873 post #1263947
Rhinocerotids. members of Rhinocerotidae, are a family of mammals collectively known as the rhinoceroses. Rhinoceroteridae are represented by five currently living species, three of which are found in Asia while the other two are found in Africa. They are typically found in environments such as savannahs, shrub covered regions, and dense forests, though the African species tend to live in more open areas than their Asiatic relatives. All living species are extremely endangered thanks to poaching and environmental destruction.
Rhinoceros have stout builds holding up large heads, which are donned by one to two iconic, large horns are composed of compressed keratin. They have elongated skulls, with small brain cavities and extended nasal bones, the surface of said nasal bones is where their horns tend to sit. Their chests are broad and their legs are short and stumpy with flat bottomed soles. Though small, they do have toes, with each digit possessing a hoof. Similar to Proboscideans, their skin is thick and mostly hairless with a wrinkled and furrowed feel. However, Rhinocerotids also have pleated skin, giving the appearance or impression of armor plating in some species. Also like Proboscids, they have tails that end in stiff, bristled tufts.
