totenkopf

Totenkopf (literally, "dead [person]'s head", commonly translated as "death's head") is a style of skull and crossbones that commonly places the skull in front, rather than above the cross (unlike the pirate-style Jolly Roger). It was used as the emblem of the Prussian Fifth Hussar Regiment under Frederick the Great, and was subsequently adopted by other German princedoms and their units, typically combined with black uniforms. It was the official insignia of the Schutzstaffel of Nazi Germany, but was also used by the Wehrmacht's Panzer units in both the Army and Air Force. "Totenkopf" was the name of the 54th Bomber Wing, as well as the 3rd SS Panzer Division, whose collars used the emblem in place of the SS sig rune.
