Species: piasa
The Piasa Bird is a giant bird-like creature found in Native American legends. The Piasa Bird is described as huge bird with the body of a bear, the wings and talons of an eagle, and the face of an ogre, and the horns of a deer, as well as a long tail. In Alton Illinois there is a huge restored painting of the Piasa Bird originally painted by the local Native Americans of the area on the limestone cliffs just above the Mississippi River which you can take a boat and float right past it. In Native American legends the word “ Piasa” means “Devourer of men” as the Piasa Bird swooped down from the cliffs above to "snatch up people and make them its meal."
