The phaser is an energy weapon/tool used by The Federation in the Star Trek franchise. Phasers can be set to stun a living being, heat up a substance, cut through surfaces, as well as kill or even entirely disintegrate a target.

Phasers vary in shape. Most often, phasers appear as small pistols, as seen in the Original Star Trek series (TOS). Alternatively, phasers may be hand-held devices that vaguely resemble remote controls or electric shavers. The Federation phasers also come in more powerful rifle models, especially in the Star Trek The Next Generation (TNG) series. The star ships also have phaser weapons called Phaser Cannons or Phaser Banks.

If the post is not Star Trek related, and the weapon used isn't clearly patterned after the Star Trek weapon, use laser gun instead.
