Estinne in Rain Gears

This is the rain gear design for Estinne the Spirit Dog (灵犬艾斯婷). The original illustration was created in 2018. In 2025, updates were made to the facial style, body structure, and design details, enhancing its overall quality.

Mistakes in the 2018 version

The 2018 version has several subtle yet significant mistakes, in addition to the not-so-appealing face.

  • Firstly, the outer line of the straightened leg cannot properly connect to the hip unless the character’s hips are excessively wide.
  • Secondly, with one leg bent and its toes on the ground while the other leg is straightened, this posture cannot maintain balance.
  • Additionally, the sleeve details consist solely of straight lines, appearing flat and lacking volume.

These issues likely stem from my attention got attracted to the reflective materials while other aspects suffered. For instance, when drawing the reflection of the rain boots, I only paid attention to add more details, resulting in the reflections of both boots being added, so the bent leg is now incorrectly touching the ground; similarly, Estinne’s pose was designed with only a dynamic outline in mind, neglecting anatomy and resulting in errors.

Reflecting on my methods

Although my creative state wasn’t great in 2018, I still encountered similar mistakes frequently in 2025. Clearly, there is an issue with my drawing workflow.

Currently, I design directly with color blocks instead of using lines. While this approach offers flexibility, it often leads to losing sight of the overall image as I focus too much on details. My lack of planning results in unclear concepts, stiffness, and weak compositions—especially when forcing a sketch into a new layout. These issues became evident during my 2025 redraw practices. People may have been more forgiving back then, but expectations for human artists are higher now, and I need to improve.

To be honest, it’s been nearly 30 years since I began digital painting. As an experienced artist—even as a hobby—I shouldn’t still struggle with fundamental aspects like correct structure, well-planned workflows, and good composition. It’s time for me to address these areas moving forward.

Design concepts

The original version was created in 2018, during the rise of “Techwear” influenced by the mobile game “Arknights.” Many artists designed outerwear from fully transparent semi-rigid materials. While I found them visually appealing, my industrial design background warned me they would be hot and uncomfortable due to their lack of breathability. Nonetheless, I decided to create a practice piece themed around rain gear using this reflective and transparent material.

Estinne the Spirit Dog is a Basque Shepherd Dog. There was no particular reason for this choice; I simply selected a long-haired breed with a light grayish-yellow coat to complement the reflective clothing design. This breed is essentially a local rural dog to me.

In 2018, I had not developed any lore for Estinne, and Spirit Animals in Disguise was still in its early stages. By 2025, however, the project had evolved significantly, focusing on local spirit animal cooperatives as a major theme. Coincidentally, the Basque Shepherd Dog comes from the home of Mondragon Corporation—a well-known workers’ cooperative in Western countries—which is an interesting, faithful connection. In the future, Estinne may serve as a spirit animal student within the Mondragon community while Kongshan Union collaborates with Mondragon through the International Cooperative Alliance.

原图主要错误

原图除了脸蛋不讨喜外,还有几处不易发现的致命错误。

  • 伸直的大腿外侧线条无法正确衔接髋部——除非角色的髋部宽得离谱。
  • 弯曲的腿脚尖着地,考虑到另一条腿伸直,这个姿势无法维持平衡。
  • 袖子的细节全是直线,显得扁平,没有体积感。

我觉得这些问题很可能是过度关注雨具的反光材质要怎么弄,其他方面的处理过于随意。例如,在画雨鞋倒影时只想着增加细节,结果把两只鞋的倒影都画了;而摆姿势时仅考虑外轮廓的动势,没有顾及人体结构,导致出现错误。

反思

尽管 2018 年时我的创作状态不好,但我发现类似的错误即便是到了 2025 年依然频繁出现,显然是绘画流程出了问题。

我目前采用的不画线稿、直接用色块设计的手法虽然灵活,但容易在反复修改细节中失去全局意识。我在绘画时一直缺乏规划意识,导致概念不清、造型和构图死板,尤其是在将原本并非如此设计的草图勉强改成其他构图时——这些问题在 2025 年的旧图重绘系列练习中暴露无遗。或许以前大家不会过于追究,但现在人们对人类画师的要求提高了,我也理应做得更好。

说实话,从开始使用板绘到现在已经接近 30 年了,作为一个经验丰富的画师,就算再业余,结构正确性、流程规划和构图等如此基础的环节不应成为我创作的绊脚石。下一步必须在这些方面做出实质性的改变。

设计概念

原图绘制时的 2018 年是手游“明日方舟”的机能风 (Techwear) 大火的年代,经常有画师会设计一些采用了全透明半硬材料的外套。我虽然觉得的确挺好看,但出身工业设计专业的本能地觉得不透气会很热啊,硬邦邦的不会穿着不舒服吗?但这种反光又透明的材料的确在视觉上很有趣,所以就试着以雨具为主题画了一幅习作。

灵犬艾斯婷 (Estinne the Spirit Dog) 是当时为了配合半透明材料而随意设计出来的角色。虽然原始文案上是基于西班牙巴斯克牧羊犬的兽人,但实际上仅仅是刻意地找了一种全身浅灰黄色的长毛狗子来作为设计的底本,以便衬托出反光和透明材质的服装设计。巴斯克牧羊犬并没有什么其他的特别之处,它们和土松、柴犬类似,其实都是当地土狗而已。

2018 年时我并没有为艾斯婷准备任何设定,“千变灵兽”的概念当时也尚未成型。然而到了 2025 年初,千变灵兽的概念已经大体定型,主角所在城市的灵兽组建生产合作社已经确定是核心背景设定。巧合的是,巴斯克牧羊犬的原产地正是西方世界比较著名的工人合作社蒙德拉贡公司的所在地。巧合的是,巴斯克牧羊犬的原产地正是著名工人合作社蒙德拉贡公司的所在地。我觉得这是一种缘分,未来艾斯婷大概率将扮演蒙德拉贡社区中的灵兽学生,而空山社与蒙德拉贡将通过国际合作社联盟展开合作。
