Phonetics, usually. Or with a whopping great keyboard. But usually a phonetics-based system, or a system that puts all the different strokes on a keyboard, and you push the key for each stroke in the order you'd draw the strokes if you were handwriting.

Russian?
They use basically exactly the same keyboards as English, only with the Cyrillic alphabet instead of the Latin alphabet. You can use an English keyboard to type in Russian, or vice-versa, as long as you change the keyboard settings in your OS and are okay with not being able to look at the keys.
