Topic: Can't post WEBM because it's anamorphic?!

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

How do I post this video file?? It says this even after converting:

error: ActiveRecord::RecordInvalid - Validation failed: video is anamorphic (SAR is 4:5)

For context it was originally an MP4, the format this site don't like, so after using both Movavi Video Converter, and even CloudConvert (yuck), it still fails. What do I just change it's aspect ratio to 4:5? (I don't think so)

e6 takes mp4 as long as it's AV1 jsyk!

unfortunately im not an expert with video stuff so cannot help with the error.

So. First of all, that MP4 is an H264, so it will need to be converted no matter what (ideally not with a random online converter). However, it is also anamorphic - that is, the actual pixel ratio is different than the displayed ratio. That's why it's complaining after conversion, and is not easy to fix without re-exporting the video from the original software.

Another day, another reason we should not have started using "MP4" as a synonym for "AV1."

MP4 is a container format, the file types wiki explicitly states AV1

It even explicitly calls out that h264 and h265 aren't allowed

Similarly WebM is also a container format for which we only accept VP9 and VP8

At the end of the day most people don't care what's in the container, they just care about the container

Nothing is being used as a synonym for anything here, we just aren't getting into specifics everywhere because we don't need to

If you just say AV1 people will likely think its an entirely different file format and has nothing to do with MP4
