Topic: Transparent_Background Edits

Posted under General

Okay I don't know if I'm missing something or not, but I thought that edits of images that remove the background were acceptable as a child post. I checked through recent posts that have the alpha_channel tag that have a parent post where the only change was removing a background and those are commonplace and approved. But mine just now was deleted: https://e621.net/posts/5547590
Granted the second example down below hasn't been approved yet, but also has not been flagged and already was uploaded before mine. But all of the other examples below are approved and show what I thought was acceptable.

Note: This is not just a "Why is my post deleted" thread, I'm asking if there's something I'm missing or if this was a mistake

yours was deleted for being a low quality edit, there was still remnants of the background left over from what i can tell. your examples were most likely already drawn with a transparent background in the first place since most artist's do, therefore there isn't an outline left over from the edit (IE if i throw something into an editor and take out the background with the magic wand tool, it usually leaves the white fuzzies around the image)

What I did to get this edit was open it in an images app and use a tool that identified the background and removed it, but I also did personally use a brush to mask and unmask erroneous areas of the image. Granted I could zoom really far in and manually erase every pixel of the original yellow background color, I felt that what little did remain actually added emphasis to the character as it wasn't just another outline, it was only left in certain areas and that gave it that Paper Mario effect

You're probably right about the examples though, the artists probably just had the background on a separate layer that they could just toggle before saving

yeah most art programs come like that.

I used to save transparently, but i despise how it looks on e6 and other sites where you get served a jpg, they look weird with all the black in the thumbnails aghh, so now i don't bother with transparency unless i'm making a base or someone requests it

In that case I'm sorry you have to look at my current pfp since that's exactly what's happening lol

nah i don't care about anyone else's i just don't like my art to have it xD

I did message the Janitor, before someone suggests that, and I'm not 100% against being told that for it to be acceptable, I'll have to painstakingly(not actually) brush out all remnants of the background, I just thought and felt that what very little did remain was framed in such a way that it genuinely did add emphasis and merit to the character.

There's a difference between a third party edit (random person), second party edit (commissioner), and a first party official edit/alternate version

An edit that removes just the background by a third party is very likely to be deleted, I looked through a small amount of alpha_channel third-party_edit parent:any and did not see a single post that only had the background removed, just sketches being colored along with the background being removed

An edit by the second party will have less scrutiny, since they are likely to have a PSD, or even be able to ask the artist for changes, but it needs to be near perfect (note that these are also tagged as third-party_edit)

A different version by the artist should in theory always be accepted

Here you seem to be the second party, so doing the edit well enough should pass as a TPE

This case is second party

  • No broad "approve background removal edits by non-artists" policy exists.
  • Removing a mostly-flat background from an image with mostly-flat coloring is about as trivial as it gets.
  • Your edit is very bad and loses minute details from the original because they happen to be adjacent to the background.
  • Much of the background remains, which is not an acceptable quality in an edit.
  • If you are entirely serious about getting transparent versions as a commissioner, you should speak with the artist to either ask for them outright or to get high-quality PNG versions.
