From what I understand mall goth's name started as an insult for "posers" who imitated the goth style but listened to stuff like korn or slipknot rather than goth rock. It's a nu metal fashion generally and doesn't really have connections to the goth subculture besides the name. "metalhead" would be a more suitable implication in my opinion.
