The tag alias #76114 agony -> pain has been rejected.

Reason: These words are synonyms and I see no significant difference in posts tagged with them.

While they both synonyms, agony is much more extreme than pain.

Its use seems to reflect this, as is used way more exclusively in extreme situations.

the pain tag currently includes things like being hugged too hard or stubbing a toe, while agony really doesn't.

I think the tag is actually under utilized, I think it would actually make a good tagging project. I could see being able to filter out extreme pain being very useful (to avoid dismemberment, gore, torture, etc). Could be useful for those trying to look up BDM while avoiding those things.

I can't speak for how it's tagged and being used on posts, but contextually I would say agony is a 9 and pain is a 3
All agony should imply pain tho
All squares are rectangles argument

Reasonable, but I think a tag name like extreme_pain would be clearer for this purpose, and consistent with similar tags.

Oh absolutely
Alias agony to extreme_pain then, that's right up e6's alley for tag naming conventions

Unfortunately I would have to reject this alias to do so due to the way antecedents work.

Prolly
But then shouldn't Agony be Aliased to that and not regular plain old pain?

How about a death agony. Where there's not necessary pain, but a lot of pre-mortem body movements and such. I've seen such a use of the word 'agony' before.

I think it should be reversed as agony is more concise, but it doesn't really matter too much.

The bulk update request #10920 is pending approval.

create alias agony (106) -> extreme_pain (0)
create implication extreme_pain (0) -> pain (10748)

Reason: An alternative, as suggested upthread.

Yeah, this

You're right that it's more succinct, but it's easier to understand on a very simplistic level. I'd imagine it's easier for non-native English speakers too
