Topic: gypsy_vanner BUR

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

As gypsy is a slur against Romani and Irish travelers using Irish Cob of Romani Cob would be better for the tag. Yes, Gypsy Cob, Gypsy Horse, and Gypsy Vanner are more widely known terms for the breed, but if we have the opportunity to avoid slurs than I personally think we should take it

BURs do not execute in order. It will be blocked by the implication, remove it first before the alias

Do I have to submit two BURs? I don't really know how the BUR system works haha.

Yes, and the only condition is that the BUR containing the removal of the implication must be (approved) before the BUR aliasing the tag with the implication

Reason: Followup:

alias gypsy_moth -> spongy_moth
alias spongey_moth -> spongy_moth
imply spongy_moth -> tussock_moth

May as well get rid of it elsewhere on the site as well. It seems about a month ago a user manually changed every instance of 'gypsy' to 'roma'.

There are several names for the people, but the Wikipedia page uses 'Romani' as the main name, and I believe that that is less ambiguous than 'Roma'.

As for the moth:

In July 2021 the Entomological Society of America decided to remove the name "gypsy moth" from its Common Names of Insects and Related Organisms List as "hurtful to the Romani people", since gypsy is considered an ethnic slur by some Romany people in North America. In January 2022, the new common name "spongy moth" was proposed, as a translation from the French name "spongieuse" for the species, referring to the sponge-like egg masses laid by L. dispar.

While we're already in the process of reducing tags with that word where possible, I went ahead and manually changed the tag of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 character to the new name she was given in the revival.

This should be done via alias so people can still find the character by using the old name.

While I was at it I figured I'd set up implications for all the MST3K characters.
