See topic #27227 and the related cartoon depictions of Pete that are currently in the Public Domain.
I would imagine the earliest iterations of Pete would no longer be under Disney copyright.

I know this is a 2 week bump, but... do we-- do we really think that a character's public domain status should influence whether they're to be added to their origin series' copytag? because that seems kinda incongruent to how we generally use that tag category.

that being said, I do remember that quite some time ago Alien Fluff made a BUR to maybe direct several Mickey Mouse characters' implications to a mickey_and_friends tag and Pete might fit better in there if that ever goes through.

Yes and no. We don't really imply characters to what they originated from. I mean, we do but it causes headaches when they feature outside of their originating work and the implications get redone. See tags like teba_(tloz) and saki_(tloz), who used to imply breath_of_the_wild since that's where they first appeared and originated from, but once they officially featured in the sequel, tears_of_the_kingdom, those implications were removed and replaced with the more general the_legend_of_zelda. Other attempts to imply characters to their origin have likewise met with resistance that they shouldn't imply the specific entry as it's likely they'll likely appear in other entries down the road, so should instead imply what they're less likely to be separated from. I don't see why this would work differently for an origin series than an origin series entry.

In the case of a character like Pete going into the public domain, they may have started out as Disney property, but once they're legally depicted outside of Disney-authorized work, I don't think the Disney tag should automatically apply to that work since Disney would own nothing in it.
