Topic: [REJECTED] Raptor claw BUR

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The bulk update request #8332 has been rejected.

create alias raptor_claws (14) -> enlarged_toe_claw (0)
create alias sickle_claw (792) -> enlarged_toe_claw (0)
create implication enlarged_toe_claw (0) -> toe_claws (174326)

Reason:

4:3 4_toes ambiguous_gender black_claws city city_destruction claws destruction dewclaw digitigrade dinosaur dromaeosaurid feet feral foot_shot green_body green_scales hi_res highway landscape_dwarfing macro macro_feral magpi prehistoric_species reptile scales scalie scuted_feet scutes sickle_claw sky solo stomping theropod toe_claws toes

"Raptor claw" and "sickle claw" refers to an enlarged toe claw typically found on dromaeosaurids.
I suggest calling it species-agnostic enlarged_toe_claw (sometimes it's drawn differently on mammalian feet - as a big dewclaw instead of full length toe).
Haven't seen either being used to refer to finger claws, but if it ever crops up, enlarged_finger_claw could be a tag too.

The bulk update request #8333 is active.

create alias raptor_claws (14) -> sickle_claw (792)
create implication sickle_claw (792) -> toe_claws (174326)

Reason:
Alternative to BUR #8332
1). "Raptor claw" and "sickle claw" refers to an enlarged toe claw typically found on dromaeosaurids.
First one is more obvious, while second one is the main way archaeologists refer to it.
Could be aliased either way, I prefer more official name.
2). Sickle claws are toe claws. So far I've only seen them on hind feet, but if front sickle claws are a thing, they should get their own tag.

Voted no on the first BUR and yes on the second one.

"Sickle claw" is generally considered the most correct term for this anatomical feature, even outside of paleontology. Other non-dromaeosaur animals have or had sickle claws, like seriemas and even terror birds, which seriemas are the closest living relatives to.

If we're introducing an "enlarged toe claw" tag, or similar, "sickle claw" should imply it, not be aliased to it, because there are other ways to do big toe claws- cassowaries for example, which have enlarged claws shaped more like swords than sickles. Or the enlarged dew claw as you mentioned in the first post.
