Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: nubless -> luna_(light_fury)

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #59448 nubless -> luna_(light_fury) has been rejected.

Reason: I know we had similar requests before, like changing Nubless back to Light Fury (character) and such. And I still say it would be better to just do it like the movie and refer to the character as "The Light Fury". But if she absolutely has to have a nickname, I reason it should be one that is more popular. Now, I can't say in good confidence that Luna IS the most popular nickname, but if I enter "Light Fury" "Nubless" on google (reminder, words marked with " " have to be present in the result), I get 9.320 results. But if I enter "Light Fury" "Luna" I get 53.300 results. Or 615.000 for some reason, if I switch Google language from english to german. In that case, "Nubless" still only yields 9.110 results.

Not to mention, "Luna" also yields pictures for the Light Fury on the "All" tab, while "Nubless" does not.

This is essentially my reasoning why Luna is most likely more popular than Nubless and why the change would make sense.

Edit
I forgot to mention: the nickname Luna for the Light Fury is a nod to a white female dragon from How to Fight a Dragon's Fury who is the same species as Toothless' book counterpart. Of course, not the best reasoning, compared to the other, but in a way it does add credibility to the nickname, if that makes sense.

Edit 2
Okay, if you downvote this sensible suggestion, at least give a reason as to why you think it is a good idea to keep the least popular nickname for the Light Fury.

EDIT: The tag alias nubless -> luna_(light_fury) (forum #350694) has been rejected by @gattonero2001.

Nubless is the nickname fans gave for the unnamed Light Fury character that appeared in the HTTYD movie series.
I have never ever heard of this character being referred to as Luna until I looked up the fandom wiki.

This alias is ultimately flawed since the nickname "Luna" references the similarly named Light Fury from the book series, rather than being a unique name created for the character in the movie series.

Nubless is ONE nickname, that was given by fans. But so is Luna. As stated and proven above, way more people use Luna in reference to the Light Fury, compared to Nubless. It makes no sense to use the less popular nickname. Just like it makes no sense to use a fan-name for an unnamed character in the first place.

"Nubless" is a fan nickname? Huh... I've never actually seen these movies, so I didn't know that.

Aye. Canonicaly, the Light Fury has no name whatsoever. Not even during the production of the movie, as far as I am aware.

Which is why it shouldn't be aliased to luna_(light_fury), since that's a fan-name given to an unnamed character (and particularly since there is a Light Fury named Luna in the books, but is different from the unnamed one in the movie).

This is why the alias is luna_(light_fury) and not luna_(httyd) or something. Not to mention, there doesn't seem to be any entry on e621 that refers to book Luna, so this argument is just as mood.
And yes, I do say it would make sense to go the official route and just call her light_fury_(character) or something, but apperently someone here absolutely wants her to have some sort of name.
Still, the three nicknames I know of are Nubless, Toothpaste and Luna, and from those three Nubless yields the least, Luna the most results, if you use the method described above.

That doesn't change anything since it's still referring to an official character from the HTTYD franchise using a fan name. Moreover, using the _(light_fury) prefix actually creates ambiguity since it doesn't clarify where it's from like _(httyd) does (is it someone's fan character that they named Luna? is it someone's character named Luna in a Light Fury form? is it for the book character, or a movie character's fan name?).

The book character isn't a Light Fury, so in that direction, there can be no confusion. Same goes for Light Fury in general, because I don't think any other franchise has beings called that officially.
About the OC argument:
Well, I can only state again that Luna is a more popular choice than Nubless. You can easily switch the names and make the same argument. Just because we use Nubless here, it doesn't mean someone would not create a fan character, that is both a Light Fury, and named Nubless.
And since the name isn't official in any way, you can't even tell them "No, you can't!"

At that point, Nubless is just "popular" here, because people are used to it. They don't care if it makes sense or not.

Which is why we shouldn't use a fan name for an official character. Neither Nubless or Luna should be the character's tag if it's not their official name.

We do give unnamed characters fan-made nicknames on the site (e.g., interstellar_demon_stripper).

The issue with your suggestion is that "Luna" is already a name for a character in the book series, and naming it luna_(light_fury) is just an unconventional way of using suffixes.
Suffixes should ideally only indicate the series origin, character owner, or tag type (e.g., example_(artist) & example_(character)).

If you really want to make it official and accurate, I'd recommend you to read topic #22945 when the alias for nubless -> light_fury_(character) was proposed.
