Topic: [REJECTED] Tag alias: music_player -> portable_music_player

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

The tag alias #59039 music_player -> portable_music_player has been rejected.

Reason: That or the other way around?

The former seems to pretty much be used to mean, well, a small portable music player with headphones, and the latter has more posts tagged.

EDIT: The tag alias music_player -> portable_music_player (forum #346806) has been rejected by @SaphireL.

Other music players could include phonographs and juke boxes. If music_player is being used here to mean a portable music player, then the above would be the better way to alias it.

Honestly that would be nice, but it would require finding all the relevant tags (they are practically absent on the wiki), adding the implications, and then still moving all with music_player to use the mp3 player portable_music_player tag because it's almost entirely tiny devices connected to some earbuds/headphones... Hence raising the alias request.

But yeah, it /would/ be nice, but not sure how much longer it would take to approve the better solution. And how to even present it... A BUR?

I wasn't really suggesting it, merely raising a potential, if not very strong objection. The rest of my post was agreeing with you, as music_player here on this site would be associated with mp3 players and not these other devices, especially since mp3_player is already aliased to the latter.

Technically this could mostly work, because most other types of music players have their own tags. So the few jukeboxes and boomboxes and whatnot under there could just be moved to the right spots. It's true that the majority under there are portable music players of some kind. So it could almost work.

But another way of going about it would be to make music_player the hub of all of the different types.

So then implicate:
portable_music_player -> music_player
jukebox -> music_player
record_player -> music_player
cassette_player -> music_player
radio -> music_player
boombox -> music_player
phonograph -> music_player

(and I've probably missed a few, but you get the idea)

I think that doing it this way might work smoother, add organization to the existing tags and make it easier to find all of them as needed. Just as an alternate solution for solving it.

Mostly working personally isn't good enough for me. If aliasing I think it'd work better the other way around (portable_music_player -> music_player).

I think the implications like furrypickle suggested are probably the best though, and treat music_player as some sort of umbrella tag for anything that plays music.

Yeah, I concede that a proper BUR and implications would be much better solution for this.

I did find some music players that aren't the small hand sized things in that tag..

So guess it would be better to move all the current content of that tag to portable_music_player, move back the exceptions from that, and then do the implications for all the different things?

Will need to hunt down all the various "music players" then. And I guess that will include everything, even not electronic.
