Topic: help archive artist URL(s) (using archive.org Wayback Machine, or other) to help find new URLs for those artists

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

EDIT: 2025 March 7 update: limit per IP seem to have gone back to normal:
Wayback message i got today: "Sorry" / "You cannot make more than (200,) captures per day. Please email us at "info [AT] archive.org" if you would like to discuss this more."

Update regarding Wayback Machine:

listerthesquirrel said:
So a (new-ish?) development at Wayback Machine is limit on number of things each IP ... can archive per Wayback (UTC) day.
...
Message at Wayback:
"Sorry
You cannot make more than (200,) captures per day. Please email us at ..."
...

So today I noticed Internet Archive seems to have REDUCED daily limit each IP can archive with Wayback Machine.

I tried to archive an artwork page (in wendigoing gallery at DevArt*) and got error:
"Sorry
You cannot make more than (50,) captures per day. Please email us at "info [at] archive.org" if you would like to discuss this more."

I didn't archive much today, so that "50," is presumably just fifty (ie. NOT a truncated 500, 5k, etc).

edit: found another Wayback limit.
Today (Sunday Feb2) I tried to archive a YouTube thumbnail (at i.ytimg.com domain) and got error
"Sorry
This host has been already captured 20,875 times today. Please try again tomorrow. Please email us at "[email protected]" if you would like to discuss this more."

so YouTube thumbnail limit of around 20k daily (exact number probably varies from day to day)

***

edit: and then tried to archive a YouTube webpage and got error
"This host has been already captured 85,802 times today. Please try again tomorrow. ..."

So strangely the amount on YouTube thumbnails that can be archived on same day is apparently LOWER then the amount limit on archiving youtube.com pages (on same day).

EDIT (2025 Feb 14):
Wandering around DeviantAart (DevArt) and found an artist with only two artwork webpages archived at Wayback Machine.

DevArt username: Torrentpelt
(apparently not at e621 yet)

"2 URLs have been captured" (for torrentpelt prefix) at:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.deviantart.com/torrentpelt/art/*

DA torrentpelt homepage (etc) says "359 Deviations",
so approx 0.56% of artist's DA art-pages have been archived at Wayback.

Archived another (today): http://web.archive.org/web/20250214231457/https://www.deviantart.com/torrentpelt/art/Todoroki-ref-183128931 ("an Okami fan-character")

EDIT : 2025 March 14 :
for anyone in search of art thumbnails to archive:
http://web.archive.org/web/20181209195118/https://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/neela87/
was missing all the thumbnails.
I archived six thumbnails (some thumbs at top, plus 2nd from last).
Last thumbnail (at bottom of page) already deleted.
9 more thumbnails to archive. (assuming the rest haven't been deleted from FA yet)

Updated

Wayback Machine seems to having difficulty today (Friday) with archiving FurAffinity pages.

Initial attempt to wayback a Taral Wayne page at FA resulted in
"This page is unavailable for archiving. The server returned code:
because access is forbidden"

2nd attempt to archive same page resulted in
"The capture failed because Save Page Now does not have access rights for https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37561482/ (HTTP status=403)."
(edit: link #1)

My guess is that the problem is with FA's "verifying you are human" system.

***
edit : example (edit: link #2) http://web.archive.org/web/20250000000000*/https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37561482/
sole wayback is for today, which redirects to
http://web.archive.org/web/20250207191745/https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37561482/?__cf_chl_rt_tk=eTmJ8Kvklryy_4x5YkwpFrDeQXEaS21JmTYkYdCw7.g-1738955865-1.0.1.1-f.9djF3B9WA7wBXr07OlXEkPVdoXYn8zPpeA2LgrITU
which is currently stuck on blank page with webpage title "Just a moment...".

UPDATE: clicking on the sole wayback at link #2 (above)
NOW redirects to http://web.archive.org/web/20250207191745/https://www.furaffinity.net/web/20250207191745/https://www.furaffinity.net/view/37561482/
which says:
Verifying you are human. This may take a few seconds.
www.furaffinity.net needs to review the security of your connection before proceeding.
...."

edit: by the way, FA pages i archived yesterday (in the afternoon?) archived fine.
So hopefully this is a temporary problem.
Possibly will get solved by a furry who works for WaybackMachine/InternetArchive.(assuming Smaugit or any furry still works there).

Updated

March the thirteenth (in Wayback Machine timezone)... oOooh spoOoky 13th!

So March 13 (in Wayback Machine time zone) has been going for almost an hour (so 23hours of this 13th remain):

So 13th of the month a good day to use Wayback Machine to archive (stuff that hasn't been archived yet):

1) art of scary things such as demons, devil, ghosts, etc. ...

examples:
https://www.furaffinity.net/search/?q=death
https://www.furaffinity.net/search/?q=ghost
https://www.furaffinity.net/search/?q=horror
https://www.furaffinity.net/search/?q=skull
https://www.furaffinity.net/search/?q=zombie
etc etc.

(usual suggestions regarding Wayback Machine apply,
such 1) checking if already archived
and 2) checking if that specific FurAffinity page can be viewed in private-window, incognito mode/ OR when you not logged in with your FA username )

Updated

News regarding Wayback Machine: They have added a higher-archive-limit if you are logged in with your archive.org account. (40,000 pages per day).

I tried saving an image and got message:
"Sorry
You have reached your daily not-logged-in captures limit of (200,) webpages,
log in to archive up to (40000,) webpages per day.
Please email us at "info [at] archive.org" if you would like to discuss this more."

Updated

SHORT version:
Possibly ridiculous thing to archive (with Wayback Machine)
but I started archiving FA's browser pages.

I switched to archiving FA browse page starting with
https://www.furaffinity.net/browse/999
and have gotten to page 986. (update: page 980 )
(I realize is a small number of pages ... but I've been distracted by other tasks/errands/etc)

If someone other person in forum is interested in archiving FA browse pages,
hope you'll staring with https://www.furaffinity.net/browse/500 (and continuing to 499, 498, etc).

If a third person is interested, hope they'll start with https://www.furaffinity.net/browse/250 (and continuing to 249, 248, etc).

***

LONGER version:
So uploading to FA has been disabled for approximately a week. (resulting in the FA browse pages being mostly static for the duration of their read-only mode)

I started with main page (aka page1), and page 2, etc,
BUT I found some uploads were being deleted in between archiving browser pages
(resulting in some uploads missing).

So I switched to archiving starting at the last browse page ( https://www.furaffinity.net/browse/999 ),
so if any other uploads were deleted ... it would just result in an overlap.

Example: There is a upload overlap of FOUR uploads at
https://web.archive.org/web/20250506220104/https://www.furaffinity.net/browse/995
https://web.archive.org/web/20250506054355/https://www.furaffinity.net/browse/996
(Overlap starts with "Dragon sketch", until "(cM) thespiralaim")
