Topic: Inside / Outside | Simple question!

I've been wondering about this for a while. Another confusing edge case is when the picture takes place inside a vehicle (train/spaceship/etc.). I've just been ignoring these edge cases.

They're inside a room-like enclosure of some sort, so probably inside works. Personally, though, I'd probably just not tag them with either if it just feels too ambiguous. Although, I suppose we could tag them as underground and simply sidestep the question.

I don't see where the problems lies in these situations you presented, so it would be easier to understand if you gave me some examples.

Thank you for your response! I think I'll try to avoid using inside or outside in these types of situation and simply use something else to describe the place the character is at, as you suggested with underground. :)

post #2562287 post #10653 I would feel a bit weird tagging these as "inside", as I would typically think of a house/shelter as "inside", but maybe it's just me. While writing the comment though, I noticed there's an inside_car tag, which sidesteps this issue altogether. There's also a lesser used inside_vehicle tag.

You should be able to tag these posts without a problem, as stated by the definitions of inside and outside:

"Note that this is tagged by the viewpoint. The location of the characters is irrelevant. For instance, if the viewpoint is from inside a house, looking outside through a windows, it is tagged as inside." - Inside Wiki

"Note that this is tagged by the viewpoint. The location of the characters is irrelevant. For instance, if the viewpoint is from outside a house, with the view looking inside through a windows, it is tagged as outside." - Outside Wiki

Now try to visualize yourself on these scenes, as if you are holding a camera and taking a photo.

post #2562287 Are you taking it from the inside or outside of the spaceship?

  • Answer: From the inside, in front of the character, so it's okay to tag as such.

post #10653 Are you taking it from the inside or outside of the car?

  • Answer: From the inside, as if you were at the passager's seat.

At least that would be my approach to tag these posts. (・∀・)
