Reason: This BUR is focused on diversifying the hybrid tag (by introducing the [species]_hybrid format). This is meant to improve the hybrid tag by making it easier to find specific hybrid species, as well as utilizing a standardized naming structure for various hybrid tags. This BUR is derived from discussion on topic #29990.

  • In summation, these [species]_hybrid tags will be structured like the *_humanoid tags. This BUR focuses on a few basic tags in order to see how folks feel about expanding upon the hybrid subtags before doing more with these [species]_hybrid tags. More BURs focused on these hybrid tags can be made later if folks are in favor of utilizing these tags.

Is it necessary to have both bird_hybrid and avian_hybrid? Considering other species stop at e.g. canid_hybrid/felid_hybrid and not dog_hybrid/cat_hybrid, including bird_hybrid seems overly-specific when avian_hybrid should be enough.

Also, I can imagine this causing people to try and use cat_hybrid, wolf_fox_hybrid, dragon_dog_hybrid, etc... which would end up needing a fair number of aliases to avoid constant cleanups. It also leaves me wondering how to deal with peoples' attempts at multi-species hybrid tags. If enough people try to use e.g. cat_dog_hybrid and require an alias, what would it be aliased to? felid_hybrid and canid_hybrid would be equally good but selecting one is playing favorites, while plain hybrid is rather bare.

Aliasing it to hybrid would still be the best course of action. It might be rather bare, but if they want more specific tags, then they had best go to the effort of supplying both of those tags.

I was following the format of avian_humanoid and bird_humanoid, but I can see why bird_hybrid could be unnecessary. I'll fix that portion.

A lot of discussion went on about this on forum topic #29990. In summary, the discussion is still ongoing about what format would be used for multi-species hybrids (or if multi-species hybrid tags would be utilized at all). Personally, I think the [species]_[species]_hybrid format can be utilized for multi-species hybrids, but this discussion is still ongoing on the aforementioned forum topic. I can handle the aliases/implications for the hybrid tags as needed (this BUR is rather basic since I want to see how folks feel about these tags first before I put a bunch of time into a bunch of [species]_[species]_hybrid aliases/implications that could end up being rejected).

Edit: Also, if folks don't want to utilize multi-species hybrid tags, aliasing those tags to hybrid will work too.

Not for the first time, I find myself thinking this site really should support one-to-many aliases.

Out of curiosity, what, specifically, is animal_hybrid going to be used for?

Hybrids where at least one of the species is an animal. This BUR is just a start, but it leaves room for tags like pokemon_hybrid to be created in the future. (If anyone else is wondering where that wiki page came from, apparently the user who created it had a good go at canonising it around the same time.)

It's the same reason why there's a humanoid tag as well as an animal_humanoid one.
