The name 'Muffins' has been used by Hasbro since 2014; finally being officially spoken in Episode 18B of My Little Pony: Pony Life, "Unboxing Day."

alias derpi_hooves_(mlp) -> muffins_(mlp)
alias derpy_(mlp) -> muffins_(mlp)

alias derpy_hooves -> muffins_(mlp)
imply muffins_(mlp) -> friendship_is_magic

This is kind of an unusual case. Even though her name was officially changed to 'Muffins' several years ago, a huge amount of folks continue referring to her as 'Derpy Hooves' within posts (and will likely continue to refer to her as 'Derpy Hooves').

If I'm not mistaken, the name 'Derpy Hooves' started out as a fan-made name, but was temporarily utilized by the show. She was referred to as 'Derpy' at one point in the show, but her name was later changed to 'Muffins' years ago. Despite the persisting popularity of the name 'Derpy Hooves' within posts, the name 'Muffins' would be the ideal name to utilize based on how character tags work on this site.

I'll admit, I've grown attached to the name 'Derpy Hooves', but it might be time to move on. Regardless of her name, I'm sure fans will continue to hold her dear to their hearts. Fly on pony girl... Fly on...

It's also technically a fan-made character, isn't it? The Derpy character was around in the community well before Muffins appeared in the show. Derpy's visual design was based on a background pony in the show that appeared with a visual error that looked like derpy eyes, but beyond that, fans created her. Then a pony appeared in the show as a direct homage to Derpy, causing a mass freak-out, and that pony was then given the name Muffin.

They're kinda interchangable. In some official media (original "character" appearance before the "Twitter is whiny" edit, comics, etc.) she's referred to as Derpy, Derpy Doo, or Ditzy Doo. "Muffins" is trademarked by Hasbro (although how they managed that is beyond me. Maybe I should register a trademark for "Potato"), and is considered the technical official name elsewhere. I think 99.9999% of people looking for the character are going to be looking for Derpy, however.

Trademarks are narrow protections within a specific field, in this case pastel-colored horses. If I made a show called Pony Cooking Adventures and called a character Muffin I'd be in trouble, but if I made an ep of Peter Rabbit with a character called Muffin it would be distinct enough to not cause problems. A trademark functions more like a guarantee that X word in X context is representing X brand, hence why you are obligated to protect trademarks as opposed to copyrights.

Think about all the superheroes with generic words as names, it's like that.

I have never heard anyone used Muffin. Derpy and Ditzy? Sure. If we really need to include the "real" name is seems like it should be another alias since it seems like it was a toy maker decision to not offend people. And most people will still search for Derpy :P

As mentioned prior. This one is a bit complicated because shes not even a character.

She was a background gag element who the fandom attached to. She was so popular they included her in more episodes and called her by her fandom name "derpy".

Some outraged soccer moms complained to hasbro about how the name was offensive and they changed it to muffins without acknowledging prior canon or fandom influence.

Its not a bad change. It serves a functional purpose as the term is in theory "derogatory". And while I have never heard it be used so Ill be the last person to stop a tag on that alone.

The main issue here is that both names are used in media for the show. So the decision is a purely arbitrary one.

"One person looking to start a fight because lashing out at people is a personality to some people" more than soccer moms.
