Try checking 'Enable roaming' when logging in. If it's unchecked, your login session will be destroyed if you access the site from a different IP address.

Getting tons of site crashes due to heavy traffic.
Along with that I've gotten "Error quoting forum post" while trying to quote someone.
Edit: got a "website under heavy load" just as I tried to post this, lol.
Are we getting DDOS'd again?

I hope the server's are not getting DDOS'd again...

Replacing some hardware, so things are running a little slow as the site tries to manage normal traffic without all of its normal resources. Should be back to normal in another couple of hours though.

Good to know that we are not under attack.
Hope to see the site back in tip-top-shape in a few hours.

It's kind of odd behavior-wise because it either times out or is quick and responsive. About 1/2 the time sounds about right. I wonder if they are having trouble with a particular server or something because it's obviously not traffic-related.

Anyone else getting constant errors while tagging?

Mostly

Redis::TimeoutError in PostController#update

Connection timed out

...with occasional:

Errno::EHOSTUNREACH in PostController#update

No route to host - connect(2)

Yep, we just got a headsup about that from our systems admin. Redis is down, so e621 will be acting a little funky for a bit while they tinker under the hood. I'm hopeful it won't take long to fix it. But we'll just have to wait and see.

Some people have uploaded posts with no tags (post #602879). Probably because of this error.

Thanks for pointing that out. I threw some basic tags on them as a starting point, because no one should get in trouble for uploading with less than 4 tags if it's the site's fault for not accepting any tag edits for half an hour. =/

Now there's (probably) another bug visible on this post tag history.

I think that Pasiphaë opened the pic when there was no tags, and pressed "save changes" after you had made your own changes and this cancel them instead of just adding his changes to yours. It happened to me some time ago, and I reported this in the past. It's not major bug but I'm pretty that Ippiki gave neutral record to mnraper because of similar situation which is kinda unfair.

That is very unfair. I'll bring it up with our lead admin and see what I can do. So this was discussed in committee. I was aware of it, but several admins weren't. And some didn't realise the full extent of it. As far as we know, that seems to be the only record given in error for what was actually this bug, but if you know of any others do no hesitate to let me know about them so can investigate. No one should be getting a record for the behavior of a known bug.

As for when it will be fixed, we don't know. Admins are more aware of it now, but there's been no word from the devs yet on when they can fix it. I know it's been around for months, but today we are just a little closer to getting it addressed. Thank you very much for bringing it up. My worst fears was that it would lead to a record for someone, through no fault of their own, so I'm glad it was brought up when it happened so that it could be rectified.

This is a good time to point out that you can use order:tagcount_asc after you do a lot of tagging to recheck your work. This sorts posts with the least amount of tags first, so any posts hit with this bug will always show up at the very top of the list.

Well, only for the issue with redis being down which preventing any tag editing until it was restored. So uploads couldn't be tagged right away. But all of those are tagged now, and that situation is rare.

The other thing, the bug, wouldn't show up with ordering by tagcount, because it just replaces one person's tags with the second person's tags if they edit at the same time (or edit from an older version of the page if it was edited since they loaded the page in their browser). So most of the time, it will still have an unknown number of tags. But it makes it look like the second person "removes" the first person's tags, even though both people are unaware of it. So it can undo valid tagging. Which looks like vandalism in the tag history, and can cause you to have to tag it twice in a tagging project. It's not on purpose, but it happens because of this tag edit bug. It's also a lot more common that people's edit gets nuked by this bug if the image is experiencing some kind of popularity. So an image that gets linked in the forums, for instance, and is being discussed. So more than one person looking at it may try to add a tag and accidentally cancel the other person's edit out. Or in the first week or so after it's uploaded (especially the first day or two) when a lot of different people are trying to add tags. But it wouldn't show as being zero tags most of the time.

Having said that though, that search is really handy for finding under-tagged images. I've used it a lot for that. It's kind of rewarding to get those and fill out the number of tags they have, because they need almost everything (or are really challenging to tag so only a few tags have been thought of yet).

Just curious, is there an ETA on when the servers are going to be back to normal? I've been getting constant 502s and "We are currently experiencing a high volume of calls, please wait for the next available representative or call again later"-type (I'm paraphrasing a bit here) pages since before the site went down. I'm guessing that it has less to do with how many people are accessing the site and more to do with the servers needing to copy everything to the new drives while running the site, but that's just my guess.

Edit: Nothing official yet, but things seem to be working normally for the last half hour or so.

Updated by anonymous

ETA for good performance again is realistically 3-4 days; we're troubleshooting some performance issues that appeared when we added more disk space. Funnily enough, the performance issues seem to be unrelated to the additional disks - so it's a bit of a mystery why it started simultaneously. We'll figure it out.

In the meantime, we're adding another server to tide us over until we can make some performance improvements using other methods. We also have some longer-term measures to help stop Ruby on Rails (the technology the site uses) from using so much in the way of resources - but we hope to have it zippy again before then.

Thanks for your patience everyone. <3

I use Dolphin browser, but it's the one for iPhone and I'm assuming you are using a phone with Android. I've used Dolphin for Android in the past (and would definitely recommend it because it is fantastic) but I haven't used it in a long time as I do not have an Android phone anymore. Although I do not have an Android phone in front of me to help you troubleshoot, I may be able to point you in the right direction.

  • Are you running the latest version of Dolphin? It may be a temporary bug that only the developers can fix, however for the end user (you), keeping a program like Dolphin up-to-date is one of the simplest troubleshooting steps and may fix it. Your phone may receive updates automatically but it is worth checking it yourself just to make sure; you can do this by simply opening up the Play Store (Google Play) and checking to see if there is a new version. On iOS you need to tap the App Store icon and click Updates.
  • (Android only) Do you have any Dolphin Add-ons installed? If so try disabling them temporarily and check to see if the images are still not loading. I have heard some reports of a particular addon called "Jetpack" causing issues with page loading on some (newer) versions of Android.
  • Adblocking programs in any browser have been known to cause issues with page loading in certain circumstances. If you have Adblock enabled in Dolphin, try turning it off temporarily and see if the issue persists.
  • Restarting your phone is an easy way to magically fix some issues. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't work. If it doesn't work it's probably something else that is causing the issues.
  • (advanced suggestions) I don't know how tech-oriented you are, but Proxies and mobile data saving features that compress web pages can cause issues in some cases.

That's about as much as I can think of off the top of my head. Let me know how things go or if you have any questions.

The white frame happens on my 3DS, but since I got my touchscreen phone last November, it's been my main tool for this site, and it works fine.

There is a workaround, disable "Dolphin Jetpack" in the options, that will allow the images to load normally, but may increase page load slightly.

I'm getting cloudflare timeouts between Stockholm and e621.net again. These have been common in the past months, it's hard to get any tagging done.

Updated by anonymous

Hello.

I just wanted to ask/clarify: have any countries ever been blacklisted on e621.net so that from their IP addresses the website wouldn’t be accessible?

It’s just that several months ago there was a rather long period of time during which any pages on the website weren’t loading at all, unless you used a proxy service to access them indirectly.

Site should be fixed now, if there are still problems try to CTRL+F5 the page.

Yay! Back to the version of the site with naughty pictures.

Updated by anonymous

Even after clearing my cache and attempting to re-download (ctrl+F5) the page it still can't resolve e621's DNS.

All browsers display the same error, upon checking the availability on other sites it says that i should be able to connect.

Any ideas?

Edit:

Attempted releasing my IP, Flushing my router's DNS and resetting my router's to default status and nothing still works.

For anyone still having problems connecting to e621, here's what worked for me.

Click windows button --- type cmd --- on the shortcut, right click and Run as Admin -- type ipconfig /flushdns press enter

click windows button --- Control panel --- under Network and Internet click View network status and tasks -- upper left click change adapter settings -- right click on your connection, Local area connection is if you're wired, Wireless Network Connection if wireless --- click Properties -- click to highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 --- click Properties button -- click Use the following DNS server addresses and in the boxes type 208.67.222.222 as Preferred and 208.67.220.220 as Alternate -- click OK, Close and close network connections -- reboot your computer and try it.

If this fixes the issue, there's no need to do anything else.

The DNS basically says "sherlockholms.com? You'll need to go to 221B Baker Street." and your computer writes it down on a piece of paper for future reference (the DNS cache). However if Sherlock ever moves your computer needs to cross it off (delete the cache) and write down the new address, which you get from an address book (DNS server). Usually this happens automatically and you don't have to do anything at all, but in some cases it doesn't update for whatever reason, hence /flushdns (the command "flushes" the DNS cache).

If anyone using OS X wants to flush the DNS cache, let me know the version of OS X you are running as the instructions may be a bit different from version to version. Edit: This blog post summarizes it well, but let me know if you need help.

click windows button --- Control panel --- under Network and Internet click View network status and tasks -- upper left click change adapter settings -- right click on your connection, Local area connection is if you're wired, Wireless Network Connection if wireless --- click Properties -- click to highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 --- click Properties button -- click Use the following DNS server addresses and in the boxes type 208.67.222.222 as Preferred and 208.67.220.220 as Alternate -- click OK, Close and close network connections -- reboot your computer and try it.

For anyone interested in doing this, this changes your DNS server to OpenDNS. Some DNS's are better about keeping the address up to date or generally respond faster than whatever it is you are currently using (e.g., LagCo internet's DNS server might be slow or buggy) and changing it can fix slowdowns and glitches for some people. Then again, it may not. An alternate server to try is 8.8.8.8 which is Google's DNS server; some may have better luck with it depending on your area.

Likewise, if anyone using OS X/iOS wants to change your DNS, let me know and I'll try to walk you through it. I'm running Yosemite/iOS 8, but the instructions are pretty much the same for other versions.

Updated by anonymous

It seems like letting the automatic DNS setting didn't clear the router's cache after the first flush, but after flushing again and setting the primary DNS (8.8.8.8) google's server and the secondary to (8.8.4.4) seemed to resolve the issue, thanks for the help.

I've been getting those for months, usually when I'm trying to get some work done.

Depends on your definition of normal. :P

Cloudflare essentially acts as a middleman between the actual servers and your computer, and it directs all the traffic. If cloudflare is getting errors (or no response) from the servers, it will give you an error like that. It can happen when there's something actually broken, but it sometimes happens with no obvious cause.

But yeah, in this case the site actually wasn't working briefly a little bit ago but it seems okay now.

Well... In my case, it happens constantly; or at least half of the time that I try to get any tag scripting done. Which leads to all of those timing out and going to waste. For instance, the whole site stopped responding for five minutes just now.

EDIT: And then it went down again as soon as I posted that.

It's been like that lately: whenever I have time to spare for tagging, the site is timing out and I end up wasting more time reloading pages than doing anything worthwhile.

...is it's just bad timing on my part, or is tag scripting maybe causing it to time out? :/

Updated by anonymous

It might be related. What exactly are you retagging? How many images are you changing at once?

One thing that you could try doing is keeping track of performance of other pages (say, a search for 'dragon'), both before, during and after you run a big tagging job. It's entirely possible it's putting a bunch of load on the site making changes like that.

I haven't kept count, but it's probably thousands of changes in a single session. When tag scripting, I'm usually adding simple tags such as anthro, comic, sex, etc. So it's quick work.

I just tried to make an focused effort of overloading it. But thirty minutes and couple thousand tags later, it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Though maybe that's because of the recent reboot.

I'll try to pay more attention to exactly when it stops working, from now on. Assuming that it's not just a coincidence, maybe it only happens during certain time of the day. I don't usually tag anything this late (...5 am over here).

performance seems pretty hit or miss right now; id say it's 40/60 working/not working. of the 60%, lately ive been getting a cloudflare error saying the website isn't available, and sometimes my browser flat out says "page not available". ill uncommonly get a 500 internal error.

it seems strange how the performance is really snappy when it's working, but grinds to a halt/doesn't load/throws up errors when it doesn't.

Yeah, our server structure is hitting its capability limits, causing timeouts whenever we get our daily usage spikes (during the week whenever the US people get off from work, and then once the EU people get back home, as well as basically all weekend, every weekend).

We're currently looking into renting more powerful servers for a couple parts of the site to mitigate this, and those are hopefully here and online sometime next week.

I take it there'll be some downtime when you're upgrading/swapping servers?

This isn't an official answer or anything (Dave/Varka would probably be the ones to ask about that) but I'd expect it to be down for at least the better part of an afternoon (MDT). They'll let us know in advance what day they are doing it so that we can let everybody know, hopefully at least a day or two ahead of time.

I like how e621 is experiencing these problems a while after I've decided to make an account here. The problems aren't bothering me (not in the least). I just feel like mentioning how I've been noticing a good amount of them surface up lately.

Been super slow for me all day.
Also getting tons of errors and timeouts.
Might be because it's a weekend.

Yeah the site's just getting hammered. The new servers definitely can't come fast enough.

Hope the servers come soon enough, the website have never been as slow for me as it right now.

you and me both. browsing = 502/500...constantly when it happens, uploading = 502/500, responding to comments or hitting respond on posts in the forums even gives those errors in the red bar that pops up lately.

certainly hope those upgrades help cause currently, around 60%+ of the time, it seems as if the whole site is broken. oh and regarding the 502 errors, the only red (error) is on the server pic, not the cloudflare one. i'm trying to upload a batch of pics now and getting tons of errors everywhere.

*sigh* and there goes an error bar saying "Error quoting forum post". well, least it wasn't ANOTHER 502 error.

Pretty sure you've said that twice before.

We're looking at Thursday, barring any other complications.

I'm a whiny lil' bitch after all :V

Edit: BTW, how quickly does the data usage for E6 grow? I don't think it was that long since you upgraded the servers last time?

So, the server upgrades of April 30 have finished. I'm definitely noticing more snappy, responsive loading times so far.
