Well, open_mouth probably isn't the thing to alias it to, but I agree with the fact there's no real point to smiley tags. :) could easily be aliased to smile, but how about faces like o_o, ._. or ^_^.

Only one of those images would even deserve the ":o" tag in the first place. I won't speak to emoticon tags in general, but this one can just be obliterated.

Today I learned this is still a tag.... at least 10 years old and only 1.6k usage.

No, it already implies open_mouth.
The only reason I can guess why some emoticons still exist as a separate tag (e.g., :D, :C, :<, etc.) is because they are for when characters show the exact same expression as the emoticon.
