Interesting. Here's an example that should end the confusion:

"Hi, my name is Alex but you may call me Alexander"

@Sorrowless: That would have worked, but I was 4, so I never thought of it. I don't care now because it was just to clear up what it was short for and now I can just grow a beard if I have to do that.
