It's not a one-off. My A220, even with the 4MATIC, it’s quite efficient. It's got a really well-tuned 2.0L turbo engine, and a lot of it comes down to the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (7G-DCT) keeping the RPMs low at highway speeds. I also utilize the ECO drive mode quite a bit. What kind of Jetta do you have? Sometimes even small differences in engine tuning or transmission can make a big difference.

2011 Turbo Diesel with 6 speed auto DSG. Wish it had the 7 speed the later models did, since it's in 6th gear by 40MPH. My route to work is on a 40MPH road, but being city driving the efficiency isn't great. 2400RPM on highways :/

It's interesting how those DSGs are geared. Your 6-speed is designed to get into its highest gear as quickly as possible to maximize fuel economy on the open road. That's why you're in 6th by 40 MPH and only hitting 2400 RPM on the highway – it's really optimized for cruising. The 7-speed later models got a bit more flexibility with that extra gear, allowing for better acceleration in lower gears and still maintaining great highway efficiency with potentially even lower RPMs in 7th."
