Peter is depicted as a middle class Irish American, who is an overweight blue collar worker with a streak of alcoholism and difficulty remaining grounded in reality. It is revealed in the series that Peter's I.Q. was tested just below the level to be considered legally "retarded" and that his mother conceived him during an affair with a local Irish drunk named Mickey McFinnigan.
