ヴァルキリープロファイル, Varukirī Purofairu

A role playing game developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix (Now Square-Enix) for the Playstation game console. The game was considered a moderate success with later titles creating increased awareness of the original to the point of becoming a "cult classic". Subsequent titles were cross platformed: Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth on the Playstation Portable (a direct port of the original game), Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria a prequel released on the Playstation 2, and Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume a second prequel released on the Nintendo DS.

The original game was noted for its blend of story-telling based RPG elements, side-scrolling combat sequences, platform puzzle mechanics, and turn based combat system with a character combo mechanic that would allow a player to "juggle" an enemy for massive combos based on a variety of elements of the attack (i.e. an attack that knocks an enemy into the air from the ground could be followed by an aerial attack that sends them back to the ground where another ground attack can strike them in quick succession). All of these elements were pulled together by a deep storyline that slowly unfolded as the main character, Lenneth the Valkyrie, slowly regained her human memories and learned about her past.

The game setting is deeply rooted in Norse Mythology. The Player assumes the role of the Valkyrie Lenneth with the task from Odin to gather worthy souls or einherjar for the upcoming Ragnarok. Character development for most of Einherjar consists of their "death scenes," which are often dramatic and highly emotional and often steeped in symbolism and metaphors, and dialogue between them and the Gods while in Valhalla. Each einherjar has a Hero Value, a number representing their usefulness in Valhalla; the higher a Hero's score is upon being sent to Valhalla the more likely they are to accomplish great deeds in battle.
