ハイスクールD×D , Haisukūru Dī Dī, Highschool DxD

Originally a Japanese light novel series written by Ichiei Ishibumi and illustrated by Miyama-Zero and later serialized for magazine publication, adapted into a manga, and made into a television anime series. The first season, titled High School DxD was followed by a second season titled High School DxD New and the third season which aired in 2015 titled High School DxD BorN.

Synopsis

The story follows the life and adventures of an average (though somewhat lecherous and perverted) high school student named Issei Hyodo. Following a chance encounter with a Fallen Angel named Raynare, Issei is brutally murdered only to be brought back to life by the Devil Princess Rias Gremory as her servant. It is later revealed that Issei was targeted specifically by Raynare because of a special "Sacred Gear" he possessed which they believed to be powerful weapon that could be used against them. Eventually it is revealed that the Sacred Gear is in fact the arm of the Red Dragon Emperor, one of two divine beasts sealed away by Heaven and Hell because of their incredible power and total lack of regard for anything but their own whims.

The world the story takes place in is filled with a wide variety of supernatural characters and creatures that draw upon a wide range of mythological sources. There are even "re-incarnations" of heroic personages from literature and oral myth such as Son Wukong (Goku) the Monkey King from the Chinese novel Journey to the West and the pantheon of gods and myths from Norse tradition as well.

Main Caharacters

Issei Hyodo - The protagonist and main character. Issei is obsessed with breasts and becoming a "Harem King". Despite his lecherous nature though he values his familial ties to Rias Gremory and her Demon Family far more than a "cheap thrill". While seemingly inept and weak Issei can demonstrate tremendous resolve and strength when his family is threatened or in danger.

Rias Gremory - One of Kuoh Academy's so called "Divas" and heiress to the Gremory name. She is known as the Crimson-haired Ruin Princess in the demon world and despite her status among the demons there she rarely flaunts or uses her title. Rias has a kind heart, but when provoked she is a force beyond control. Though she openly flirts with Issei she does disapprove of his lechery and is prone to jealousy when he becomes close to others within her family.

Asia Argento - A former nun who possesses a Sacred Gear known as the Twilight Healing. She was excommunicated from the church and cast out when it was discovered that her healing powers worked on demons. Asia was killed by Raynare to secure her Twilight Healing for the Fallen Angels, but when Raynare was defeated the Sacred Gear was returned to her and Rias brought Asia back as her servant. Asia is quiet and shy, though she has a deep affection for Issei and is willing to overlook much of his lechery and will sometimes offer herself as a target for his lechery when she deems it necessary.

Akeno Himejima - Another of Kuoh Academy's Divas and Rias' second in command. Akeno is a half-fallen angel and half-demon and despite the power it brings she loathes the fallen angel half of her persona. Later Issei is able to help Akeno reconcile her divided nature, allowing Akeno to make amends with a father she had thought abandoned her to death but in fact had only left to draw away danger. With her conflict resolved Akeno was able to draw upon her fallen angel power more deeply and strengthen her substantial powers even more. Akeno openly flirts with Issei, at first mainly because she has a sadistic streak, but later in earnest when she realizes that she in fact has come to care for Issei in a much more intimate way. Her affection towards Issei often draws the ire of Rias.

Koneko Toujou - Also known as Shirone, she is a two-tailed nekomata who was rescued by Rias' elder brother Sir Zechs and given to Rias' care shortly thereafter where she was given the name Koneko by Rias. Koneko is a powerful melee fighter who can also draw upon Mystic arts, but because of a tragedy that split her from her older sister and caused her elder sister to become dark in heart Koneko fears using the Mystic powers she has access to. Koneko strongly disapproves of Issei's lechery and is prone to act violently upon observing it. Later when Issei comes to her rescue and helps her reconcile her divided nature with her sister Koneko's attitude softens considerably, though she still disapproves of his lechery she rarely employs violence to stop it.

Yuto Kiba - The so called "Prince" of Kuoh Academy and all around nice guy. Yuto came to serve Rias after having been held and used as a test subject by the Church in an effort to develop a soldier capable of wielding a True Holy Sword such as Excalibur. As a result Yuto harbors a deep hatred of the church and all its practices. Yuto wields the Sacred Gear known as Sword Birth which allows him to summon blades with a variety of properties such as a sword that can counter fire or ice based attacks. Yuto also commands the Balance Breaker known as Sword of the Betrayer, a special blade that combines the Holy and Unholy aspects of Yuto's own conflicted nature in a single powerful sword.

Xenovia Quarta - Former exorcist in service of the church and wielder of the Holy Sword Excalibur Destruction. During her search for the rogue exorcist in possession of the other Excalibur pieces Xenovia encounters Rias and her family. Later she learns that God is dead and with that knowledge she is forced from the church. With few options left she approaches Rias and agrees to become her servant. Xenovia is a natural Holy Sword user, requiring no training or manipulation to wield them. As such she can call upon her Holy Sword Durandal at will, a blade whose edge is sharp enough to cut through anything.

Gasper Vladi - Gasper is a dhampir, half-human/half-vampire, who was mercilessly hunted and hounded as a child when his parents were killed by the Church for their Vampiric nature. Gasper possesses the Sacred Gear Forbidden Balor View which allows him to freeze the time of anything within his field of vision. However the power he holds deep inside him, combined with the power of his Sacred gear and his own insecurities prevent him from properly using the power and so he has been sealed away and developed a deep fear of the outside world. Gasper also likes to dress as a girl, finding that the clothing suits him better and few argue the point with him. Though his cross-dressing disappoints Issei, he takes it in stride and strives to help Gasper show his "manliness" in other ways (such as helping him to freeze girls so he can grope or peep on them).
