Axies are the main species of creatures in the NFT-based game Axie Infinity. They're round, four-legged creatures with a variety of possible body parts in six slots (eyes, ears, horns, mouth, back, and tail). There are nine tribes of Axie, with six being common (Beast, Aquatic, Plant, Bug, Bird, and Reptile) and three being hidden (Dawn, Dusk, and Mech). Every possible body part is connected to a specific tribe, though it's common for Axies to also have parts that don't match their tribe, and what body parts they have determine their combat abilities.

In the game's canon, available only outside of the game itself, they're the main inhabitants of the world of Lunacia and come from the essence of its patron god Atia. However, they're in a constant struggle with monsters known as Chimeras, who also came from Atia's essence, over the fate of Lunacia.

Outside of the game, Axies were notorious for being unobtainable without purchasing an expensive NFT. Most during the game's heyday were loaned through the game's scholarship program, which has been criticized for being highly exploitative. However, among other factors, due to the immutable nature of NFTs, as more and more Axies were bred (done through the use of tokens called SLPs, or Smooth Love Potions), their numbers exploded and their value collapsed, leaving most who purchased them with tremendous financial losses.
