Bloodborne is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment released for PlayStation 4 on March 24, 2015. The game is considered a spiritual successor to the Dark Souls series and released to incredibly positive reviews across the board, exceeded sales expectations and has won multiple major awards.

The game takes place in a Victorian Gothic setting and draws inspiration from the literary works of H.P. Lovecraft and Bram Stoker, architectural designs of real-world locations in countries such as Romania, the Czech Republic and Scotland. Most of the voice acting was done with an intentional European accent to add to the mystique of the environment and atmosphere. Bloodborne features action focused combat and the player may regain health lost in combat by retaliating against a blooded enemy and obtaining their blood. Most melee weapons feature a mode switching mechanic lending them the name Trick Weapons, this allows for a myriad of attack combos and variations, giving the game an occasional Devil May Cry vibe. The game intentionally lacks any true defensive equipment ^{(apart from the Wooden Shield joke item that actually does nothing in combat)}, defense plays out through the "feast or famine" riposte mechanic, which uses an offhand gun and quick dodging to dash away from a locked-on foe quickly. The player can fire their gun at key moments in an enemy attack animation to stun them for a short time which allows the player to execute a "visceral attack" that deals significant damage, offers momentary invincibility, and allows the player gain back a significant amount of lost health.
