Ciel Phantomhive is the protagonist of Black Butler. He is a 13-year-old human and Victorian aristocrat (rank of earl). His family traditionally serves as the "Queen's Watchdogs", investigating criminal elements and conspiracies at the behest of Queen Victoria. His family was murdered by a Satanic cult, but in attempting to sacrifice him to summon a demon, they accidentally bound said demon, Sebastian Michaelis, to his service. Sebastian now acts as his butler and caretaker, with the understanding that Sebastian will obtain Ciel's soul when their contract is finished.

Ciel wears an eyepatch to cover his unusual pupil, which is inscribed with a pentagram as a mark of his contract.

Ciel is betrothed to Elizabeth Midford.
