Black Butler (Japanese: 黒執事 Kuroshitsuji) is a manga by Yana Toboso started in 2006. Set in late Victorian England, it follows Ciel Phantomhive, a young earl whose family was murdered by a Satanic cult. In attempting to sacrifice Ciel in order to summon a demon, the cult accidentally bound the demon, Sebastian Michaelis, to Ciel's service. Ciel now seeks revenge on the cult who destroyed his life, with the understanding that Sebastian will take his soul upon fulfillment of their contract. As part of their contract, Sebastian acts as Ciel's butler, appearing to onlookers as a perfect English gentleman. The story features a mixture of comedy and drama, with the serious investigative plots often interspersed with funny domestic scenes involving Ciel's comically inept butlers.
