NEOM (styled in all caps) is a planned arcology city in Tabuk Province, Saudi Arabia, in the northwestern corner of Saudi Arabia near the coast of the Red Sea. Notably, the entire city was planned to be entirely enclosed within mirrored glass, forming a single 100+ kilometer-long linear building running through the desert ("THE LINE"). The design has been heavily criticized as being very impractical in terms of logistics and urban planning, and as being only possible with technology that does not currently exist. It was advertised as a "smart city", leading to concerns about surveillance and privacy within the confined environment. The Saudi Arabian government is accused of forcibly expelling or displacing the Howeitat tribe living in the area, using violence, police harassment, and other forms of coercion. Additionally, there are concerns regarding exploitation, trafficking, and dangerous working/living conditions for foreign construction workers in the project.
