Character: tammany tiger
The Tammany Tiger was the animal personification of Tammany Hall, a political machine known in the mid-19th century for its corruption and undue influence in New York City and state politics. Originally the mascot of a fire company affiliated with Tammany, the tiger began to personify Tammany Hall in political cartoonist Thomas Nast criticisms of Tammany Grand Sachem "Boss" Tweed's corruption. The Tammany Tiger effectively died in the mid-1960s when Tammany Hall finally shut down.
