Amazon.com, Inc. better known and doing business as just Amazon is an American multinational proprietary technology company best known for their e-commerce platform. Engaged in electronic based commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence, Amazon is the largest retailer in the world, and currently fourth largest publicly traded company in the world. Founded in 1994, Amazon started out as an early e-commerce platform for books, but quickly expanded into selling a large variety of goods. Amazon owns plenty of other companies as subsidiaries, including Amazon Web Services, Ring, Twitch, IMDb, Whole Foods Market, and Zoox. Amazon also owns several digital streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, MGM+, and Audible.
Founded in 1994 by Jeff Bezos as Cadabra, Amazon started out as a e-commerce book seller based in Bellevue, Washington. Amazon went public in 1997 and quickly expanded into an international market level, expanding into selling other retail items such as video games, consumer electronics, and toys. After 2002, Amazon quickly expanded into becoming a major e-commerce retailer, being the largest of its kind, and expanding into cloud computing services. Amazon's growth remained stable for much of the 2000s and 2010s, but began growing significantly during the late 2010s as e-commerce began to take hold over the consumer market. Amazon then further continued explosive growth following the COVID-19 pandemic, quickly becoming among some of the largest companies in the world by 2021.
