The Jungle Book is a collection of short stories and poems written in 1894 by English Author Rudyard Kipling.
The first three short stories "Mowgli's Brothers", "Kaa's Hunting", and "Tiger Tiger" are actually a prequel to the short story "In the Rukh", released a year prior in 1893 within the collection Many Inventions. The midquel, The Second Jungle Book was published a year later in 1895 and featured additional stories including: "How Fear Came", "Letting in the Jungle", "The King's Ankus", "Red Dog", and finally"Spring Running". These stories were later compiled together in 1933 to create All the Mowgli Stories, a chronological canon of the life and times of Mowgli and the rest of his friends and family.
The most notable character of the Jungle Book is Mowgli, an Indian boy raised by wolves in the Seoni Woods of India. His name apparently means "little frog" to refer to his small hairless body. Being raised by wolves, he had an inhumanly heightened senses and reflexes and the ability to speak to animals. All the Mowgli Stories or The Mowgli Chronicles, and the characters featured in them have been the basis for many film and television adaptations over the decades all over the world including:
- The Jungle Book (1942)
- Disney's The Jungle Book (1967)
