In the canon of The Magnus Archives, an "avatar" refers to a person who has made a supernatural bond with one of the eldritch entities that control the setting, each of which corresponds to a major fear. Avatars are initially human, but in the process of becoming avatars must modify their bodies through magic rituals to become humanoids or, in some cases, fully inhuman monsters.
Notable avatar characters include Jonathan Sims, Elias Bouchard, and Alice Tonner.
